Dark and dehumanising sci-fi novel, Island On Fire by Andrew Salter, gets the adrenaline pumping from the very first page.

Island On Fire by Andrew Salter

A die-hard maverick sentenced to death for avenging the murder of his family, Bill Mortimer has been granted a reprieve by The Shield, the authoritarian movement now ruling the UK. In return for his life, he is conscripted into a bloody war and risks a different kind of death.

Dr Martha Franshell, a talented geneticist who performs illegal modifications on unborn babies, has been imprisoned by the Vice and Virtue squad for her crimes against morality. Against the backdrop of a war-ravaged country where civilisation is crumbling, the two are thrown together by a set of perilous circumstances, pitted against each other in a bid to save their own lives.

Surrounded by brutal military forces, religious zealots and marauding cannibals, Mortimer and Franshell must ultimately stare down the barrel of human depravity at its worst to survive. But not all endings are happy ones as readers are left wondering at what point would they leave their humanity at the door in order to survive.

Fast-paced, brutal and thought provoking, Andrew Salter has most definitely hit the literary ground running, and with the calibre of praise already garnered, an eager fanbase already awaits his next literary offering.

    Andrew Salter

After twenty years working in IT for a financial services company in London, Andrew Salter moved back to the West Country, where he now spends his time hiking the Dorset – Devon borderland and the local coastline.

He developed Island On Fire from an original film screenplay that was probably too ambitious and costly for a first-time writer.

His other interests include military history, cricket, football and music.

Island on Fire is a story set in a near future West where the economy and living standards have crashed and those two pillars of stability and continuity, the United States of America and Europe, have turned against each other.

What makes this scenario so interesting are the moral dilemmas it presents for the individual. Do you subjugate your own values, or do you make a stand against the bad guys?

For me probably the most shocking aspect of World War II is not the destruction wrought by armies and air forces but the actions of large numbers of civilians, who did not just turn a blind eye but also voluntarily assisted in the suffering of millions of others. Although by the end of the century, normal service seemed to be restored with new technology to distract us. History was over. But the West still seems to love a good war, especially if it is overseas and far away against a country that is easy to obliterate.  But just recently war seems to be getting closer to home and not quite so easy.

    A Single Breath Of Air

Retired police officer, Jo Draxler introduces Caterina, an Italian feminist protagonist, whose sexual desires occasionally find her under the sheets with men who are not hers to enjoy. Through A Single Breath Of Air, Rina’s adventures span 20 years from 1982 to 2002, taking her from her hometown of Salerno in Southern Italy, to the London Suburbs, and then on to South Africa for a new life.

A Single Breath of Air (Vixens and Signorinas) by Jo Draxler

In 1982, young Caterina Mazzini gazes across the Tyrrhenian Sea; her spirit is stirred as she hold communion with the sea breeze. At college, her physics master, Professor Russo, teaches her about the white stork and the principles of flight, while out of school, she is taught about sex by Stefano, the boyfriend of beautiful Juliana.

When Rina leaves Italy for England, and a career in aviation, she marries an airline pilot, but it isn’t long before he strays. Her revenge is sweetly twisted, and after a return to single life, Caterina’s world pivots during a near death experience.

Now an Artisan dressmaker, Rina meets Barrett and is smitten, spending the day contemplating the intense love she feels for him. Then she seduces a stranger in her own home, and she cannot forsake her secret lover who she keeps hidden from everyone, even her best friend Emma. Rina juxtaposes the most important people in her life and makes a plan which may resolve her complex situation.

After a calamitous finale, she reflects wistfully upon her childhood in Salerno, Southern Italy, her old life in England, and the dramatic events which brought her six thousand miles from Berkshire to Johannesburg.

Ultimately a tale of deep friendships, love and a whole host of moral dilemmas, all of which Rina endeavours to resolve, A Single Breath Of Air delivers pitch-perfect escapism. It also leaves readers laughing, crying, cooking Italian food and even contemplating taking flying lessons.

    Jo Draxler

A retired police officer, Jo Draxler’s occupation left him broad minded and equipped with invaluable life experiences.

I live in Northeast England with my wife and our daughter’s dog. She left home but the mutt stayed with us. I have penned travelogues for family and friends, simply because I enjoy writing.  This is my debut novel.

I had no intention of writing a book; I was too busy making tea. Then, while the ragù was simmering, I took a minute to scroll through Facebook. One post grabbed my attention: An Italian lady was trying to make a dress in her house in Johannesburg but was being distracted by her noisy parrot. Every tale needs a beginning, so I spent the rest of the afternoon writing a short story, just for something to do really. 464 pages, and one year later, I had a novel.

New Vilnius Jewish Museum Celebrates Litvak Legacy From Bagels To Nobel Prize

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best creativity magazine in the UK“, the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews, known as Litvak Museum, has recently opened in Vilnius celebrating the rich historical and cultural heritage of Litvaks and their influences on modern societies.

Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.com

    Litvaks

Jewish culture has been inseparable from Lithuanian life for centuries. From widely-recognized gastronomical legacy like bagels to composers featured in blockbuster movies, Litvaks — an ethnocultural group formed in the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania — made an impact on a global scene. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has traces of the Litvak heritage preserved in its streets.

Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews

In 2020 the city celebrated the Year of the Vilna Gaon and invited residents and visitors to unlock the secrets of the Litvak history on special routes.

Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews

In celebration of the Jewish heritage, the Museum of Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews, also known as the Litvak Museum, was opened in Vilnius at the beginning of the year. Located in the former building of the Hebrew Gymnasium Tarbut on Pylimo Street, the facility is the largest branch of the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History. As the only museum of its kind in the country, it provides an extensive overview of the Lithuanian Jews’ history, culture, and customs, and the aspects of their daily life. The top floor of the building is dedicated to the Museum of Rafael Chwoles, a famous Jewish artist of the 20th century.

The museum is a tribute to the Litvak contribution to local and global culture and highlights their historical endeavors. Through the immersive design of 17 exhibitions, visitors are welcome to uncover different aspects of the Jews’ lives in Lithuania throughout the centuries, like their history, Judaism, language, literature, music, and theatre, and learn about stories told by Litvaks themselves.

At the same time, opening a museum of such scale brings attention to a more recent legacy of Litvaks who emigrated to foreign countries, and their long-lived influence on global communities.

-Dr. Simonas Strelcovas, head of the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History

    Global recognition of Litvak’s influence

Numerous Litvaks shaped local and global cultural, artistic, and scientific scenes through the times. Writer Romain Gary, a Vilnius native, carved a name for himself in the literary circles in France, becoming the only writer to receive the prestigious literary award Prix Goncourt twice. Scientist Aaron Klug, who spent his childhood in Vilnius’ region, went on to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Leonard Cohen, a Jewish-Canadian artist with Lithuanian roots, was a prominent creator of the 20th century — a singer, songwriter, poet, and novelist. Vilnius has immortalized the creator’s memory in a sculpture erected in the Old Town. Philip Glass, a prolific composer born to Jewish emigrants from Lithuania, has created operas, chamber music compositions, and many other musical works, as well as movie soundtracks, one of the most famous being the score of The Truman Show.

Not only have famous Litvaks left a lasting legacy on a global scale, but the Jewish gastronomical heritage has enriched food experiences around the world. For instance, although mainly popularized by New Yorkers, bagels, heavily associated with the Jewish culture, have actually originated in Vilnius’ region. A baked potato casserole kugel, a staple in Lithuanian households, is also traced back to Jews as it is a traditional holiday dish.

A part of the exposition also brings forward the linguistic ties of Lithuanians and Jews. It depicts how modern Hebrew, Yiddish, and Esperanto languages are rooted in the country’s regions where Litvaks resided.

Coward Of Love by Cooper Canon

As Cooper navigates the landscape of love and relationships, it proves to be a complex and multifaceted journey. This is a tale of love, lust and everything in-between, where no emotion is spared, and every experience is a thread woven into the intricate tapestry of one man’s life, occasionally with hilarious outcomes and occasionally heart wrenching.

The book is an explicit and detailed memoir of life and experiences with women and relationships for better or worse, each one is described and explained in detail and taken stock of and questioned.

While he originally intended to write a science-fiction novel, Coward of Love is a book that will undoubtedly take readers out of their comfort zone. Unambiguous in his writing, and definitely not for readers under eighteen, this memoir isn’t written to shock, but to make sense of all that has gone before, in order to be better placed for what lays ahead.

Guaranteed to pique the interest of female readers, Cooper Canon may consider himself to be a coward in love, but as an author his courage shines bright.

    Cooper Canon

During the Covid lockdowns I started initially to try and make sense of each experience and found myself diving deep into the myriad of emotions each relationship had stirred.  My hope is that readers will take away an understanding of who I am as a person, in this rather confined sphere of life and be able to feel the highs and lows with me along the way.

    Becoming Mzungu

In Becoming Mzungu, Stella Beake drew from her own experiences of working for an humanitarian organisation in Africa as she takes her intrepid protagonist Emma from London’s treadmill existence, to living a life full of previously unimaginable experiences. It is Emma’s relatability, fears and subsequent joy when she finds her ‘African’ feet that makes Becoming Mzungu such an intoxicating read.

    Becoming Mzungu by Stella Beake

Having made the biggest decision of her life, to leave her job, her flat, and her friends in London, Emma has decided to move to Africa to work for a humanitarian aid organisation. As the day of departure gets closer and closer, Emma finds that fear and excitement overwhelm her in equal measures.

Emma finds that the following six months are completely different from anything she imagined, but give her so much more than she had ever dreamed. The people, the experiences, and learning: the friendships, the rollercoaster of emotions, and the personal growth gave her something she had never considered before. A whole new career and a whole new life.Throughout her first six months in Burundi, Emma makes friends, and learns a lot from those around her. The work and the life brings her joy, happiness, fear, loneliness, sorrow, heartache, and laughter, in equal measures.

First travels to Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi where she meets some of the other staff, both national and international, who she will be working with over the next few months and gets to know a little bit about how international humanitarian work operates. It seems both complex, and mundane at the same time. She then travels onto Madzivazivigo, a remote area in Burundi where she will be the administrator on a project doing a range of activities.

Along the journey Emma deals with disappointments in how the international humanitarian system works; the stresses and tensions of living and working so closely with people she has only just met; arguments and misunderstandings; and a medical emergency. All the while this is set against the background of humanitarian response work, both the life-changing and the humdrum. If nothing else, it is certainly an adventure.

Inspiring, eloquent and highlighting that the efforts of humanitarian organisations don’t always deliver the intended effect, Stella Beake’s authentic narrative may just prove a much-needed catalyst to many of its YA readers  – that life is very much what you make it.

    Stella Beake

Stella Beake is an ex-humanitarian aid worker, now living back in the UK, enjoying a gentler and less adventurous life after over a decade overseas.

Working in the area of gender and gender-based violence across different continents gave Stella a strong insight into the insidiousness of patriarchy and oppression, and a yearning for a more equal society.

    Wednesday Funko Pop

It found that ‘Wednesday Season 2’ is the most anticipated unreleased show season in the UK, coming in with a whopping 96,921 searches a month, over double the searches for second place.

The second season of the supernatural series was confirmed in January of 2023; however, as of the time of the study, no release date is currently confirmed.

    Season 1: A Spooktacular Hit:

    • Wednesday Takes Center Stage: Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of the iconic character was a highlight. Her deadpan delivery and ability to capture Wednesday’s sardonic wit resonated with viewers, both old and new.
    • A Murderous Mystery: The season centered around Wednesday unraveling a supernatural mystery plaguing Nevermore and the surrounding town.
    • Familiar Faces with a Twist: The series featured appearances by classic Addams Family characters like Gomez and Morticia, played by Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones, adding a touch of nostalgia for longtime fans.

    Looking Ahead to Season 2:

    • Production is Underway: Filming for season 2 is reportedly set to begin in April 2024, with a potential release date sometime in 2025. While an official location hasn’t been confirmed, production has shifted from Romania to Ireland for the new season.
    • More Mystery and Mayhem: Details surrounding the plot of season 2 are scarce, but creators hinted at “more torture” for Wednesday, suggesting she’ll face even greater challenges and mysteries in the upcoming episodes.
    • A New Chapter?: The change in filming location could hint at a shift in the narrative. Will Wednesday’s adventures take her beyond the walls of Nevermore Academy? Only time will tell.

    Squid Game Season 2

    Squid Game Minix

Coming in second on the list is ‘Squid Game Season 2’ with an average of 46,327 monthly searches for the next installment in the Korean Survival Thriller. A second season was confirmed in 2022 after it took the world by storm, but it currently has no planned release date.

    Season 1: A Global Phenomenon

    • High-Stakes Games: The series captivated audiences with its unique blend of childhood nostalgia and brutal violence. Games like “Red Light, Green Light” took on a terrifying new dimension, showcasing the lengths people would go to for a chance at financial security.
    • The Masked Mastermind: Viewers were captivated by the mystery surrounding the masked organizers of the games, fueling speculation and theories about their motives.
    • Seong Gi-hun’s Journey: The story followed Seong Gi-hun, a down-on-his-luck protagonist, as he navigated the deadly competition and grappled with the moral complexities of the games.

What to Expect in Season 2

    • Gi-hun’s Revenge?: Season 1 ended with Gi-hun refusing to return to the games, vowing to expose the organization behind them. Will season 2 explore his quest for revenge and justice?
    • New Games, New Dangers?: While details about the plot remain tightly under wraps, we can likely expect a fresh set of deadly games, testing the limits of the new contestants’ humanity.
    • Deeper Dive into the Backstory: Season 1 offered glimpses into the masked organizers and the enigmatic Front Man. Season 2 might delve deeper into their motivations and the origins of the deadly games.

    Cobra Kai Season 6

Cobra Kai Daniel on The Table Read Magazine
    Cobra Kai Daniel Funko Pop

Third place on the list goes to what is expected to be the last of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, season 6. It comes in with 40,179 average monthly searches, and Season 6 is confirmed but is currently without a release date.

A Legacy of Kicks and Punches:

    • Rekindled Rivalry: The core of the series lies in the ongoing feud between Johnny and Daniel. Their contrasting teaching styles – Johnny’s brash “strike first” approach and Daniel’s more defensive Miyagi-Do technique – have created a generation of passionate students caught in the middle.
    • Enter Kreese: John Kreese, the villainous sensei from the original films, has loomed large over the series. His manipulative tactics and ruthless teachings have fueled the conflict, raising the stakes for everyone involved.
    • Evolving Alliances: “Cobra Kai” isn’t just about Johnny and Daniel. The series has developed a rich cast of characters, with students from both dojos forging unlikely friendships and rivalries. Season 6 promises to explore these dynamics further, potentially leading to unexpected alliances.

    Season 6: The Final Showdown

    • All-Out War: With Kreese out of the picture (for now!), Terry Silver has tightened his grip on Cobra Kai, turning it into a ruthless dojo spreading fear across the valley. Season 6 is poised to see Daniel and Johnny put aside their differences and unite to take down a common enemy.
    • The Fate of Miyagi-Do: Season 5 saw the closure of Miyagi-Do, leaving Daniel’s students unsure of their future. Will they find a new home under a unified dojo, or will Miyagi-Do’s legacy fade?

Epiphone Greeny Guitar 1959 Les Paul Standard

The story of “Greeny” is shrouded in mystery, but few guitars are as illustrious.

Greeny is one of the most iconic original Les Paul™ Standards ever made, with a unique sound as recognizable as the guitar itself. Previously owned by Peter Green, it was used throughout his time with Fleetwood Mac and later sold to Gary Moore, who used it for three decades with Thin Lizzy and as a solo artist.

Now owned by Kirk Hammett, Greeny has passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists. Its distinctive sound is partly from the out-of-phase middle switch position due to the neck pickup’s reversed magnetic-polarity.

    Kirk Hammett

One of the most iconic rock guitarists of our generation, Kirk Hammett has been the lead guitarist and a contributing songwriter for Metallica since 1983. Before joining Metallica, he formed and named the metal band Exodus.

For a deep dive into his music influences, the early days in the San Francisco metal scene, and his 37 years as the lead guitarist of Metallica, watch Gibson TV’s “Icons” series interview with Kirk Hammett. This episode of “Icons” features archival and never-before-seen photos of Metallica, with Kirk talking about touring history and personal stories about recording the group’s pivotal albums, including Kill’em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice For All, and The Black Album.

    Gibson Custom Shop

The Inspired by Gibson Custom Shop range is the crown jewel of the Epiphone Collection, and this Epiphone Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard follows the successful release of the Gibson Custom Shop “Greeny” and the Gibson USA “Greeny” announced earlier this year.

This exceptional Epiphone guitar was inspired by Kirk’s legendary original and allows players around the world the opportunity to experience the magic of “Greeny” for themselves. It features premium components, including Gibson USA Greenybucker pickups with the neck pickup reverse mounted and complete with a reverse polarity magnet, a Switchcraft® pickup selector and ¼” output jack, CTS® potentiometers, Mallory™ capacitors, and Grover® Rotomatic® tuners with spade-style buttons on a Gibson-style “open-book” headstock. A vintage-style Epiphone hardshell case in brown and pink is also included.

    Epiphone

For 150 years, Epiphone has been a leading innovator in instrument design with models like the Casino, the Texan, and Masterbilt Century Archtop Collection. Epiphone began as the “House of Stathopoulo” family business in Sparta in the 1870s and rose to fame during the jazz age in Manhattan before joining Gibson brands in 1957.

Today, Epiphone continues to make history from its headquarters in Nashville, TN. Epiphones have powered classic recordings by Les Paul, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones along with today’s top artists like Peter Frampton, Gary Clark Jr., Tommy Thayer of KISS, and Lzzy Hale. Martine – The Girl In The Shadows by Martine Lachambre

Written in novel format, Martine Lachambre describes with great sensitivity and in emotional detail her traumatic childhood, drawing you into her story. Nobody told Martine when her birthday was nor thought to celebrate it with her. With stoical self-sufficiency, and heartbreak in the face of a multitude of abusive and neglectful situations, school and neighbours’ homes were Martine’s only sanctuary.

Bursting with the young Martine’s courage, resilience and determination to navigate herself to a new and safe life, it was her intelligence and independence that allowed her to find comfort and eventually love after meeting Kenneth at 13 before loosing contact with him, reuniting with him at 16 and marrying him at 17.

Eloquent and compelling, the good news is that Martine is still happily married to Kenneth.  And with her bravery leaping from the page, the decision to share her story is one that showcases that however traumatic one phase of life is, it doesn’t have to become the blueprint going forward.

    Martine Lachambre

Martine Lachambre is 56 years old and has two chihuahua dogs that keep her busy.

I am currently studying for a BSc Hons in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Portsmouth University.

I wrote my autobiography because every time a mentioned a small episode of my childhood, people would say you should write a book, so eventually I did.

I am still married to Kenneth, and we have two daughters and a gorgeous 13 year old granddaughter.

Through an intoxicating sonic soundscape and heartfelt, emotional lyricism, GRAYTheBand is commanding the attention of listeners across the globe.

    All Done

Honouring the Edmonton music scene, GRAYTheBand recently recorded a long-awaited debut album, All Done, which offers a poignant look at the insidious nature of modern society, relationships, and the complexities of self-preservation. With an overarching theme of love and disparity, the album will resonate with listeners from all walks of life as we navigate this world, conquering the ups and downs.

Funded by the Alberta Foundations for the Arts, eight tracks were recorded with Royal Studio’s Arnel Ethier and feature masterful local talents such as K-Riz and Janay Thomas. All Done is the product of steadfast collaborative effort and a vital contribution to the genre, with a polished yet raw approach which complements Gray’s warm, melismatic vocal style, capturing a powerful sound.

The album includes tracks such as title track All Done, which is an emotional introduction to the album which references overcoming a particular period in one’s life that was exceptionally challenging. In Locked In, Gray cheekily compares the speaker’s ambivalence in engaging in a relationship to signing a loan contract.

The last song on the album, That Much Of A Life is testament to the transformative power of boldly embracing a love that otherwise seemed impossible, bookending not only the outlier anthemic folk sound we observe on the first and last songs but also reinforcing the theme of death and rebirth

The song explores feelings of gratitude and wonder experienced while forging an unanticipated bond with someone who will forever change our sense of self and purpose.

    Earthquake Lights

    Earthquake Lights

Four-piece rock band from NYC, Earthquake Lights, met during their time at college. They quickly achieved success with their very first EP, earning placements in a national NBA/Tissot ad campaign and an Alex Gibney documentary, receiving critical acclaim alongside multiple Spotify editorial playlists, a placement in Isabel Sandoval’s award-winning film Lingua Franca, and a feature on Vulfpeck’s album The Joy of Music, The Job of Real Estate.

Earthquake Lights have garnered millions of streams for their music to date and have charted on iTunes four separate times in the Top 40 and Top 20 in good company with artists and bands like John Mayer and The Killers.

    Silhouette

New single, Silhouette, is about the search for life, penning the question, “What’s the connection between music and space?” From the dawn of time, humans have been very curious, always searching and yearning to discover. Whether it’s within the universe, new species, new planets, new stars, or simply within ourselves which is its own universe.

The search for life can be within yourself, within your own world but it would also be within outer space. It can be feeling like you’re always by yourself, but you find out along the way that you’re not traveling alone. EQL is always learning to make music that can be specific to every person’s lens. It is not very literal to how exactly you should interpret this song, it can be seen differently through everyone’s own lens.

We hope that people who might feel like they’re being lonely or searching for something out there can find solace in this.

Andy leaned into the “what if there was life elsewhere in the universe?” question and ultimately we felt it was interesting as just a question alone, without an answer. You could be alone or you could be surrounded by others.

-Lead singer of Earthquake Lights, Myles Rodenhouse

Built around the desire to add more irregularity into their sound, “Silhouette” features a 5/4 time signature, reminiscent of the chromatic lines of Serge Gainsbourg, as well as the bombast and showmanship of early David Bowie. For the lyrics, the band reached out to their friend and poet Andy Axel. He was drawn to a story in the New York Times that described “luminous fast blue optical transients” and “silhouettes” in space, which he felt was a great fit for the sound of the music, and which also connected with their aspirations to pay homage to old Bowie records.

Despite the lyrics touching on loneliness, sonically the track emits a mood of excitement for something new.

In the bustling world of book marketing, grabbing a reader’s attention is more crucial than ever. Here on The Table Read Magazine, I work on using words through interviews and articles to appeal to people who are looking for their next read. But what about out there in the Wild West of social media?

On platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, eye-catching visuals are key, and that’s where your book cover comes in. But what if your cover art could do more than just sit pretty on a shelf? Enter the world of animated book covers, a dynamic marketing tool taking the literary scene by storm.

    Animated Book Covers

On Fiverr, I have multiple 5-star reviews for creating captivating book cover animations. By using digital animation, I’m bringing book covers to life, transforming them from static art into powerful marketing tools. These animations aren’t just a gimmick; they’re strategic tools designed to bring your book’s essence to life on social media platforms.

Attention-Grabbing Advantage: Social media feeds are a whirlwind of static images. An animated cover with subtle movement or eye-catching effects instantly breaks through the noise. It stops scrollers in their tracks, sparking curiosity and prompting them to take a closer look at your book.

A Glimpse into Your Story: Animation allows you to transcend a static image. You can highlight key elements, like a character’s weapon flashing or a fantastical cityscape coming alive. This tantalizes potential readers with a sneak peek into your book’s world, igniting their imagination and leaving them wanting more.

Standing Out From the Pack: A sea of static covers can get monotonous. Animated covers inject a dose of dynamism, making your book a beacon in a crowded marketplace. This visual punch creates a lasting impression on viewers, setting your book apart from the competition.

Ready to Animate Your Book’s Success?

If you’re looking to take your book marketing to the next level, consider investing in an animated book cover. It’s a small investment with the potential for big returns, increasing your chances of reaching new readers and leaving a lasting impression on the digital landscape.
