Author Interview – Keith Richard – Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions

I interviewed Keith Richard about his life and career, what inspired him to write his new book, Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions, and the work that went into it.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Keith Richard is a logistics and transportation professional with 40 years of experience leading complex supply chain organizations in the U.S. and overseas. He and his family are 30-year residents of McKinney, TX and he and his wife Lana spent their formative years on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They have strong family relationships in both locations. Keith and Lana have 2 adult boys and 5 grandchildren.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

Several years ago, I began thinking about telling my story and I spoke to several friends and family members. In 2024, after encouragement from the same friends and family members I decided to move forward.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I have always enjoyed the art and creativity of writing and my story about Iraq was the springboard to move forward in 2024.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

Approximately 6 months.

What made you want to write Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions?

The reality and toll of civilian lives during and after a war needs to be recognized by the U.S. Government. Many civilians have been killed, injured and mentally impacted supporting the U.S. military without the recognition and support that is appropriately awarded to our soldiers.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions?

Recalling the chaotic and tragic events and emotional turmoil that transpired during and after the my tenure.

What was your research process for Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions?

Many news articles that are on the internet about events, documents that were retained, and memory.

How did you plan the structure of Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions?

Communicate the emotional, frustrating, chaotic and tragic events that transpired during my one-year tenure leading a civilian organization on a battlefield.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Sand, Grit and Dangerous Supply Missions need?

Yes. Minor editing to structure the book in a published format.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Think about the entire story and draft and/or document an outline of the chapters. It helps you organize your thoughts and drives your motivation.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

The journey of mental health, leadership and happiness.

And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment?

Very proud. Was it worth the effort? Telling my story was both therapeutic and gave me a since of purpose.
