I interviewed Thomas Cullen about his life and career, what inspired the story of his YA novel Charlie-Man, and his creative writing process.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Thomas Cullen

I am a lawyer, now a judge, whose first love is writing—mainly about non-legal topics. Over the years, I have written op-eds and essays for various media outlets, including The New York Times and have been profiled in The Washington Post. These pieces ran the gamut from politics and current events, to fly fishing and the joys of summer camp. Now that I am a judge, I can’t write about politics or current events. So, I decided to write a YA novel, Charlie-Man.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

I wanted to write a novel for a long time. I generally knew the theme and setting (being a teenager in the American South in the early-to-mid 1990s), and I had the first chapter percolating in my mind for a decade or so.

When did you take a step to start writing?

In January 2024, I wrote an essay for Cardinal News (a Virginia-based news site) on fly fishing in the snow with my Golden Retriever. That was a blast to write, and, once it was published, I decided to take a stab at my novel.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

I completed a rough draft of the manuscript in about three months. After it was accepted by my publisher, I spent about nine months rewriting, revising, and polishing with invaluable input from my editor and project manager. The whole process—from day one of writing to publication—took about 18 months.

What made you want to write Charlie-Man?

I wanted to write a book that younger readers could relate to, but also one that would interest “older” readers, particularly those who came of age during the 1990s. Many of the experiences and challenges faced by the young protagonist, Charlie Stewart—the loss of a parent, the burdens of friendship, unrequited love, and anxiety—transcend time or place. But Charlie-Man may be unique in that the main character faces these obstacles in the pre-Internet, iPhone and social-media era, when landline phones, CDs and “mix tapes” were still king.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Charlie-Man?

Having never crafted a novel, I was particularly apprehensive about writing dialogue—mainly for the teenage characters—that sounded authentic. Once I started, I tried to imagine what the mid-1990s version of myself would have said, recalling many of the phrases, quips, and smart-ass remarks that were in my arsenal. Ultimately, I found that writing dialogue was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the project.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

It is often said that most first novels are at least partially autobiographical. And I think that’s true to a certain extent with the protagonist, Charlie Stewart. That said, he is not a dead ringer for me, or anyone else that I knew at that time. Some of Charlie’s experiences and his general outlook on life are familiar to the author, but Charlie had a tougher time—and handled his challenges with more aplomb—than I did (or could have).

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

Charlie-Man by Thomas Cullen on The Table Read Magazine
Charlie-Man by Thomas Cullen

I’ll leave it to the reader to determine whether there is a true antagonist, within the traditional meaning of that term. Insofar as Charlie’s best friend, Beau Miller, can be considered an antagonist, I will plead the Fifth on who inspired him.

What is the inciting incident of Charlie-Man?

Probably when Charlie plunges off the lowhead dam into the turbulent water of the James River at the end of Chapter One.

What is the main conflict of your book?

There are several conflicts—both internal and external. In terms of internal conflicts, Charlie, throughout his senior year, faces mounting anxiety from his rekindled relationship with Katie Hendricks, his uncertain prospects for admission to a “prestigious” college, and his complicated, and sometimes fraught, relationship with Beau. Some of those internal conflicts eventually manifest into profound external conflicts by the end of the school year.

Did you plot Charlie-Man in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

Once I had memorialized the first chapter that had been floating around my head for the better part of a decade, I wrote the rest of the book mainly “by the seat of my pants.” I would occasionally jot down notes and short outlines for various chapters or scenes as they came to me, but I didn’t have a rigid formula in front of me when I was writing.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Charlie-Man need?

I was supported by an incredibly talented editor and project manager at Brandylane Publishing. Their insight and comments over various iterations of the manuscript were insightful and strengthened the novel immeasurably. Every writer needs a good editor, and I was very fortunate to work with two standouts.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

Write the first chapter. Once you’ve accomplished that, try to move the story along every day.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I thoroughly enjoyed writing Charlie-Man—far more than I ever thought I would. I may write another novel, but I have nothing in the works yet.

And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

It was a wonderful experience and certainly worth the time and effort involved.

  1. Whereas Nolvadex and Clomid can work equally as nicely,
they will only work equally as nicely if they’re dosed
properly. This is where many fail after they use Clomid as Nolvadex
is way stronger on a per milligram foundation. For instance,
with 40mg of Nolvadex, for Clomid to match it you want 150mg.
As for hCG dosing, 500iu to 1,000iu per day daily for 10 straight days
is your plan and applied exactly as discussed above.
Once the hCG remedy is full, you will begin your Nolvadex remedy at
40mg per day or Clomid at 150mg per day; whichever you choose, you’ll continue it for 2 weeks.

It essentially acts as a topical androgen blocker, although that is not its
major purpose (caution should at all times be taken when utilizing products off-label as
irritation could occur). Testosterone is the main androgenic hormone in males, so it’s natural that once we take
Testosterone Cypionate at larger doses, androgenic exercise is amplified.
Whereas these aren’t life-threatening unwanted aspect effects, they can be a few of the most distressing for
males as a outcome of they’re so visually noticeable.

Your PCT protocol following a Testosterone Cypionate cycle must contemplate any other AAS
you’ve used. In almost all cases, your most valued PCT device will be SERMs like Nolvadex and Clomid.
These Days, many of us choose Enclomiphene as our major SERM, but you may need your
    own choice.
Additional, you will discover some of the detection times carry a variety; on this
foundation, if you’re a examined athlete it’s all the time greatest to assume the longest detection time attainable.
Deca Durabolin can have a devastating effect on testosterone ranges,
    usually necessitating adequate rehabilitation post-cycle.
Till natural testosterone ranges return to normal, customers
are suggested to chorus from taking another steroids
and implement post-cycle therapy during this era. We have discovered incidents of acne vulgaris to be more prevalent on trenbolone as a end result
of excessive stimulation of the sebaceous glands. Additionally, we
observe a better incidence of hair follicle loss on trenbolone in comparison with other anabolic steroids.

This is the outcome of exponential increases in dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
This is as a outcome of their bodies have not previously experienced
such levels of anabolism or protein synthesis.
This contains use of the oral prescription drug isotretinoin by
a small proportion of users (65, 67). Isotretinoin is considered to
be the best medication towards pimples (68). Despite its effectiveness, isotretinoin therapy
is generally reserved for extreme nodulocystic scarring pimples or pimples immune to different
therapies (68). Isotretinoin, nevertheless, can lead to dermatologic,
ophthalmologic and psychiatric/psychosomatic adverse events (69), commonly
including dry skin, chapped lips, and nose bleeds (70).

Maintain in thoughts that Nolvadex isn’t useful for mitigating other types of estrogenic side
effects apart from gynecomastia. If longer-term use is required (2-3 months) to reverse more superior gyno, Raloxifene is known to be protected for
use over this era. HCG is a hormone15 that can help reverse or
prevent some of the extra critical unwanted side effects we see with steroid use, like the shrinking of
the testicles and the potential infertility that comes along with lowered sperm production16.

Only the attached ester differs, controlling the release
rate of the hormone. Both are very comparable, however Testosterone Cypionate has
a slightly longer half-life of 1 extra day. At the
practical level, users are unlikely to notice Legal Steroids: A Safe Alternative to Performance Enhancers distinction,
and the selection usually comes right down to availability.

Even though Testosterone Cypionate is without
a doubt the most secure steroid that males can ever use,
it’s still possible for antagonistic unwanted aspect effects to rear their heads.
All Through the cycle (or a minimal of on hand), it’s
good to take an aromatase inhibitor (AI) like Arimidex at 0.5mg/eod
or 12.5mg/day Aromasin. Testosterone Cypionate is
the preferred ester of testosterone used by bodybuilders alongside Testosterone Enanthate.
    Nonetheless, most bodybuilders (including myself)
won’t strongly prefer both one until you have points with the service oil (more on that later).

Calculations have to be re-checked and should not be used alone to guide
affected person care, nor should they substitute for
    scientific judgment.
This brings about new strategies that may or may not turn out to
be normal and widespread in drug testing worldwide.
You can’t assume one 12 months to the following that the
identical avoidance methods will work. Some current developments
in anti-doping testing that labs have developed
embrace gene doping tests, retroactive liquid testing, and long-term metabolites.
But with the recognition of on-line sales, few
persons are selling steroids that means nowadays. It can generally take a quantity of months after stopping
your PED cycle earlier than your regular menstrual cycle resumes.

Some women will find a quick restoration of regular cycles; it will depend on the person and which PEDs
    had been taken.

  2. A significant factor in the in999 club’s appeal is the secure payment gateway integration, supporting popular methods like UPI. This feature is crucial for building user trust, as it guarantees that both deposits for playing and withdrawals of winnings from tournaments are handled reliably and safely for all participants.

  3. Tigro Club Game ek popular online platform hai jahan users simple prediction games khel kar paise kama sakte hain. Iska login system fast hai aur gameplay smooth rehta hai. Har round me new chance milta hai jeetne ka, jisse game aur interesting lagta hai. Beginners ke liye bhi ye kaafi easy aur safe platform hai.
