On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, soul legend Beverley Knight has become ambassador for the Paul Reid Foundation, vowing to break down financial and educational barriers to music careers in honour of her late musical director and “brother” Paul “Reidy” Reid.
Soul legend Beverley Knight has become ambassador for a new charitable foundation launched in memory of her long-time musical director and guitarist, Paul “Reidy” Reid. The initiative aims to remove financial and social obstacles that prevent talented young people from pursuing careers in music.

A 25-Year Partnership Cut Short
Paul Reid worked closely with Beverley Knight for more than 25 years before his death at the age of 54 on Christmas Day 2020. His widow, Pauline Reid, and son Liam have now established the Paul Reid Foundation to continue his lifelong commitment to equality and opportunity in the music industry.
The foundation was officially launched at a gala event held on 31 January 2026 at the Park Regis Hotel in Birmingham, where Beverley Knight performed and paid tribute to the man she considered family.
A Life-Changing Friendship
Knight has spoken warmly of the immediate bond she formed with Reid. From the moment they met, his calm demeanour, strong leadership, and shared faith created an instant connection. They often shared light-hearted jokes rooted in church life, and his steady presence made him the natural choice as her musical director.
Over the years, their professional relationship grew into something far deeper. Knight has described Reid as family—someone whose even temper, confidence, and skill earned the respect and affection of everyone around him. Their collaboration lasted right up until his passing, a testament to the strength of their partnership in an industry where long-term working relationships are rare.
Addressing Inequality in Music Education
Knight, a passionate advocate for greater access to music careers, has highlighted how financial disadvantages often hold back supremely talented individuals. Without support, even the most gifted young people from modest backgrounds can find success out of reach.
She has also drawn attention to the contrasting situations in education. While fee-paying schools continue to value music for the transferable skills it develops—such as confidence, resilience, and discipline—many state schools in the UK are reducing or removing music lessons altogether. Reid firmly believed in fairness and equal opportunity for all, regardless of background, and the foundation was created to help bridge that gap.

Programmes Designed to Open Doors
The Paul Reid Foundation will deliver practical support through three main areas:
- Music scholarships for both formal and informal study and training
- Mentorship opportunities with established musicians and creative professionals
- Access to local music programmes and community resources that encourage learning, performance, and artistic exploration
By partnering with industry professionals, educators, and cultural organisations, the foundation seeks to ensure that passion and talent—not personal circumstances—determine who gets the chance to participate in music.
Continuing a Legacy of Creativity and Community
Pauline Reid has emphasised that the foundation was set up to genuinely help those who feel called to a life in music. It honours her husband’s enduring passion for creativity and his desire to support the next generation, particularly aspiring performers and behind-the-scenes talent in the Birmingham area and beyond.
Knight has pledged her full support, noting that Reid cared deeply about up-and-coming musicians who struggled to access training in performance and studio techniques. Although he is no longer present, she is determined to help fulfil his vision.
“I loved Reidy like a brother,” she has said, adding that many others in their musical circle felt the same deep affection. The foundation, she believes, can become a beacon of hope for talented young people in communities that are often overlooked.
A Beacon for the Future
At its heart, the Paul Reid Foundation is about opening doors and demonstrating the transformative power of music to shape lives, build confidence, and strengthen communities. By providing tools, support, and encouragement, it carries forward Paul Reid’s belief that creativity should be accessible to everyone.
With Beverley Knight as ambassador and a growing network of supporters, the foundation stands as a fitting tribute to a man whose calm leadership and generous spirit touched so many. His dream of levelling the playing field for aspiring musicians lives on, offering new generations the opportunities he passionately believed they deserved.
