Beverly Glenn-Copeland
Beverly Glenn-Copeland, a visionary artist preparing for a new album release in 2026, has unveiled soul-stirring cover versions of two Marvin Gaye classics, “What’s Going On” and “Save The Children,” through Transgressive Records. These renditions carry deep emotional weight, reflecting Glenn’s lifelong commitment to fostering unity and resilience through music.

A Timeless Message for Today
Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album What’s Going On addressed critical social issues like war, racism, and police brutality, while advocating for compassion and unity. Its themes resonate strongly with contemporary challenges, including the crisis in Gaza, attacks on transgender rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Glenn’s covers serve as a personal response to these issues, channeling Gaye’s prophetic wisdom to speak truth to power and inspire collective healing. The recordings honor Gaye’s legacy, capturing the spirit of a pivotal era while addressing today’s struggles with hope and solidarity.
Music as a Force for Connection
Glenn’s work, often created alongside Elizabeth Copeland, emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity. Their eclectic compositions draw from diverse musical traditions, weaving them into a unified expression of beauty, pain, and healing. Through unguarded sincerity, their music invites listeners to embrace courage and imagine a world built on community and connection. Glenn’s art serves as a reminder of our collective strength, offering nourishment to face shared challenges together.

A Storied Musical Journey
Glenn’s career began in the 1960s at Montreal’s McGill University, where he studied classical singing and performed at Expo 67. His early self-titled albums in the 1970s showcased his powerful voice and genre-spanning songwriting. In 1986, while living in rural Ontario, Glenn self-taught digital synthesis and recorded Keyboard Fantasies, releasing it as a limited 200-copy cassette. Initially overlooked, the album was rediscovered in 2015 when a Japanese collector contacted Glenn about the remaining copies. This sparked global interest, leading to his first European tour in his 70s, a journey documented in Posy Dixon’s 2019 film Keyboard Fantasies.
Inspiring a New Generation
Since its rediscovery, Keyboard Fantasies has captivated modern listeners and artists. In 2021, Glenn released Keyboard Fantasies Reimagined, featuring reinterpretations by artists like Arca, Blood Orange, Julia Holter, and Kelsey Lu. His influence extends further, with Romy of The xx sampling him in her single “Enjoy Your Life” after a mesmerizing live performance in Stockholm. Glenn also collaborated with Sam Smith on a re-recording of his song “Ever New” for the 2024 Red Hot Org Transa album, cementing his impact on contemporary music.

A Universal Creative Process
Glenn’s 2023 album The Ones Ahead drew from a rich tapestry of musical traditions, including American jazz, Irish fiddle, and West African percussion. His creative process is guided by what he describes as the Universal Broadcasting System, where he tunes into the world’s vibrations and transcribes them into music. This intuitive approach allows Glenn to create songs that resonate deeply, reflecting both personal and collective experiences.
Looking Ahead
With a new album on the horizon, Glenn continues to channel his artistry into messages of hope and unity. His covers of Marvin Gaye’s classics reaffirm his role as a musical bridge between generations and cultures, urging listeners to heed the call for connection and resilience in turbulent times.
