There were two main reasons for me wanting to publish my book. One was that I had been defamed in the eyes of my colleagues, my pupils and their parents. They ended my career. I needed to clear my name. The other was to expose the Catholic mafia which still exists today.
Blessed, Betrayed but Not Beaten is the story of how I survived after my constructive dismissal, bore witness to institutional betrayal and learned that the greatest threat to education is not the lack of funding or challenging students, it is the corruption of those entrusted to protect it. It is a cautionary tale about what happens when good people remain silent, when governance fails and when those who should safeguard our children’s futures instead plunder them for personal gain. Having taken me 32 years to publish, I hope it stands as a testament to resilience, to teachers who stayed true to their calling, despite impossible circumstances and to the enduring belief that education matters, perhaps now more than ever.
I was born on 1st January 1942 in a stately home, Tyringham Hall, a Grade 1 listed home near Newport Pagnell. Such luxury was afforded my birth as my mother was evacuated from the East End Maternity hospital in Stepney.
I was educated in an overcrowded primary school in East London where qualified teachers were in short supply after the war, but I was fortunate enough to have an old teacher who taught me how to read just in time to sit the 11+ exam. I passed and went to a ‘central school’, though a selective school, it was not a grammar. I spent seven years there before embarking on my teaching career.
My first appointment was in a primary school in Dagenham where I taught for two years unqualified. I studied to become a teacher at St Mary’s College in Twickenham after which I moved to Manchester where I married my wife Noreen. I taught in a mixed secondary modern school in Middleton, a small town north of Manchester for five years after which I was appointed at a grammar school in Ardwick, Manchester in 1970. This school had a great effect on my teaching career giving me lots of ideas to follow.
In 1975 I moved south to Orpington as a deputy head where I taught for almost five years in a boys secondary modern school This school closed in 1979 along with its sister school to form the new Catholic comprehensive school in Bromley where I taught for fourteen years when I was forced out in January 1993.
My philosophy of education has always involved experiential learning, preparing pupils in the classroom to go on educational and residential visits and international school exchanges. I am a gregarious person, and I always tried to get to know my pupils more personally during these times. I still miss working with young people even now. Many of my ex-pupils are now close friends. “I am the proud father of six children and have been blessed with eleven grandchildren. My wife and I celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary recently.
