We Are Home

On August 3, 2025, author Kevin Dobbs will release We Are Home, a bold and uplifting children’s picture book that celebrates belonging, community, and the power of hope. Aimed at Key Stage 2 readers (ages 7-11), this moving story tackles real-world issues like racism and prejudice while delivering a heartfelt message about resilience and the beauty of diverse communities.

Set in a vibrant, multicultural British neighborhood, We Are Home follows young Kasey, who discovers hateful graffiti scrawled with the words “Go Home.” Disgusted by this act of division, Kasey transforms pain into purpose. They devise a plan to cover the graffiti with a patchwork of fabrics, each piece contributed by neighbors from varied backgrounds—some born in the UK, others abroad. Through Kasey’s journey, readers meet the diverse individuals who make the neighborhood a true home, learning about their stories and cultures.
With the help of an elderly Japanese neighbor, Kasey stitches the fabrics into a powerful patchwork that symbolizes unity and belonging. In a collective act of defiance and hope, the community comes together to hang the patchwork over the graffiti, reclaiming their space. In a quiet moment of reflection, Kasey wonders, “How can they tell us to ‘Go Home’? We Are Home.” This poignant line underscores the story’s core message: home is not just a place but a feeling created by a united community, regardless of differences.
Dobbs’ storytelling is warm and accessible, never shying away from complex realities but presenting them with optimism and empowerment. We Are Home challenges the notion that multiculturalism cannot succeed, instead showing that diversity strengthens communities. It encourages young readers to recognize their own agency, demonstrating that even in the face of hate, creativity and togetherness can create something beautiful and lasting.
Through its vivid narrative and inspiring message, We Are Home reminds children and adults alike that hope is stronger than hate and that from the ashes of division, vibrant communities can thrive. This timely book is a must-read for fostering conversations about belonging, resilience, and the power of collective action.

I was inspired to write this book by the Spellow Lane Library and Community Hub fire in Liverpool during the riots last summer. The attack on books and ‘community’ really spoke to me. Its release date is chosen to be the one year anniversary of this event.
While it is a traditional children’s picture book in size and shape, it is definitely aimed more at the Key Stage Two age group. I am a Key Stage Two teacher, and I firmly believe that picture books are under-represented for this age group. Some KS2 children like or need to finish a story in one go. Some need pictures to aid comprehension and language acquisition. Some just prefer them for their aesthetics. This type of book is brilliant at distilling one key theme and focusing on that and as such make better discussion stimuli (at home or school) as well as just being enjoyable to read!
I live in Spain now, with my Spanish wife, having moved here two years ago. Prior to that, I worked in a school in a multi-cultural community in the centre of Peterborough for close to 15 years. I still teach in a British School in Spain, and this is my first book. Reading together is my older son’s favourite thing to do, so it is a thrill that he will have his name in a book in the dedication. I also love sports, quizzes and reading (children’s and adults’ books!).
