  • The Simpler Life’s Farm Location

    The Simpler Life’s Farm Location

In response to the first episode of the major new six-part Channel 4 reality series The Simpler Life, where 24 Brits must embrace Amish living, Libbear Barton’s owners are giving viewers a behind the scenes look at the set’s location. Explore The Simpler Life’s Farm location on The Table Read, “The Best entertainment magazine in the UK”.

Libbear Barton, The Simpler Life, Channel 4 Farm House, The Table Read
    Libbear Barton

The true star of the show: the stunning Devon farm you can visit for a holiday.

    The Simpler Life

The home of the hit TV show, The Simpler Life is a beautiful farmstead, Libbear Barton, in North West Devon that you can visit for a holiday.

The property comprises four luxury, self-catered holiday lets accompanied by a beautiful, heated indoor pool, soft play and playground.

Set in 40 acres of the stunning rolling hills of North Devon that viewers fell in love with, the stunning Georgian farmhouse and barn conversion cottages sleep up to 40 people.

Max Manners, Libbear Barton’s general manager, said: “Tuesday night’s premier of The Simpler Life on Channel 4 left viewers in no doubt that living in the countryside is not for everyone. But even the most city-centric of us still love to occasionally escape there on holiday. We specialise in family friendly holidays for those who enjoy the outdoors but want to know that there is plenty to do indoors too should the weather not be perfect…which it occasionally is not!”

Libbear Barton, The Simpler Life, Channel 4 Farm House, The Table Read

Stylish And Modern Country Home Libbear Barton

But if you are looking for the “simpler life” experience you will not find it here. Having undergone a recent refurbishment, viewers would have difficulty recognising the accommodation.

Gone are the sparse, candlelit bedrooms and stripped back furnishings you would find in an Amish community. Instead, you can expect to find stylish, modern, country homes offering the highest level of comfort.

Despite the departure from the Amish tradition of eschewing modern life, Max and Alex Manners, who run the site, still aim to create a business that is as sustainable as possible.

Solar powers a large proportion of the site’s energy requirement with the rest supplied through green renewables. The water supply is delivered from an on-site borehole and windblown trees provide fuel for heating in the winter months. The couple also aspire to a level of self-sufficiency.

“We have been inspired by what the contributors were able to achieve in a short time,” explains Alex Manners. “We aim to continue to cultivate the land for vegetables and raise our own meat much like they did on the show. Holiday guests will be able to collect eggs and pick veg for the table during their stay – hopefully inspiring them to live in a way that minimises their impact as much as possible.”

The Globe To The Louvre: Most Cultured European Cities Ranked

On The Table Read, the “Best Entertainment Celebrity Magazine in the UK“, USwish.com share their research into the most cultured European cities.

Home to cultural keystones like The National History Museum, The Vatican and The Louvre, Europe has always been renowned for its deep artistic roots. But with an abundance of attractions and limited time, culture lovers will inevitably have to make some tough choices when deciding which locations to prioritise.

Interested in this, Uswitch.com/mortgages created an index based on the total number of theatres, museums, landmarks and cultural tours across each city in Europe to calculate a cultural score. The study then considered additional factors such as reviews and population size, to determine the most cultural cities in Europe.

    Cultural Scores

With a cultural score of 9.85 out of a possible 10, Prague is the most cultured city in Europe, Uswitch.com/mortgages can reveal. Home to cultural landmarks like Prague Castle, The Golden City has 14.46 landmarks for every 100,000 residents, the most monuments of any city in Europe, and 129% more than Vienna’s 6.29 per 100,000.

Prague also benefits from having the most theatres (1.89 per 100,000), 28.6% more than the number of theatres in London (1.47 per 100,000), and enough to crown the Czechian city as Europe’s cultural cornerstone.

With cultural hotspots such as the Rijkmuseum, Amsterdam (9.81/10) has the most museums per 100,000 people in Europe (7.66), and is the second most cultured city in the continent. The city has 4.8% more museums per 100,000 residents than Prague (7.31), and 142.4% more than Brussels (3.16 per 100,000). The Netherlands’ capital also consistently places highly for every factor, coming second for cultural tours (3.39 per 100,000), and third for theatres (1.16 per 100,000) and landmarks (9.31 per 100,000).

Dublin is the third most cultural city in Europe, with a score of 9.48/10. With 2.17 cultural tours per 100,000 residents, Ireland’s capital has half the tours on offer in Rome (5.87 per 100,000). Dublin also ranks fifth for landmarks (8.50 per 100,000), 41.2% fewer than Prague in first (14.46). However, culture in Dublin is assured by sites like The Irish Emigration Museum and The Irish Whiskey Museum, contributing to 4.72 museums per 100,000 people. This is the third highest in Europe, and 31.5% more than those in Oslo (3.59 per 100,000), placing fourth in this factor.

You can find the full dataset here.

    Methodology:

    1. Uswitch.com/mortgages conducted this research with the aim of identifying Europe’s most cultured cities. This study evaluates the number of cultural tours, museums, landmarks and theatres of 27 cities across the continent.

    2. For each of the towns/cities analysed, the evaluation metric was based on the number of culture tours, museums, landmarks and theatres per 100,000 population.

    3. To generate the seed list, the Natural Earth Populated Places dataset was used to gather a list of the top European cities by their estimated population.

    4. For each city, listings for cultural tours, museums, landmarks and theatres were collected along with the number of reviews for each. The point of interest data was collected from a reputable business directory.

    5. Following the data collection phase, the sample was aggregated by the city to calculate the total number of cultural tours, museums, landmarks and theatres. A threshold of 25 reviews was implemented to omit attractions of lower significance.

    6. The data was finalised by taking the average percent rank of theatres, cultural tours, museums and landmarks per 100,000 population within each city. The index was subsequently sorted in descending order by score.

    7. Data was collected between 15/02/2022 – 16/02/2022 and is accurate as of then.

  • World’s Smartest Cooker Hood Wins KBB Innovation Award

World’s Smartest Cooker Hood Wins KBB Innovation Award

The new trends in homes for 2022, as identified by Trend-Monitor, are quieter homes, indoor air quality, smart – and curated homes. It is therefore no surprise that the RørosHetta SENSE cooker hood was awarded the People’s Choice award for Innovation at the KBB Birmingham 2022, Europe’s leading kitchen and bathroom trade show.

    RørosHetta

Family-owned Norwegian company RørosHetta continues its journey in breaking boundaries when it comes to cooker hoods, with launching integrated smart technology with life-saving features.

World’s Smartest Cooker Hood Wins KBB Innovation Award, Family-owned Norwegian company RørosHetta, on The Table Read

RørosHetta has captured the market in the last decade by offering bespoke designer hoods that are customisable, both through colour-matching hoods to kitchens as well as the ability to customise dimensions.

    World’s Smartest Cooker Hood

Following the success in the Nordics, the company has now set their focus on the UK with the launch of the world’s smartest cooker hood. Apart from being one of the world’s most quiet hoods, it boasts a range of smart features, such as switching your electrical hob off in case of fire risk and regulating the home’s indoor air quality.

Professor Prashant Kumar, founding Director of the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) at the University of Surrey, said: “Kitchens are one of the most important places in our homes but unfortunately are also the place of air pollution hotspots arising from the burning of fuel and the diverse cooking activities. There is a clear need for better ventilated kitchen designs and the technological solutions that cannot only inform the kitchen users about the levels of air pollution but can also effectively mitigate the exposure to cooking emissions. It is encouraging to see the fusion of the pollution sensing technology incorporated into kitchen hoods to provide state of the art solutions to cooking exposure.”

World’s Smartest Cooker Hood Wins KBB Innovation Award, Family-owned Norwegian company RørosHetta, on The Table Read

    Fire Safety

Poor indoor air quality has been linked to a range of illnesses and according to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 3.8 million people a year die prematurely from the exposure to household air pollution.

When it comes to fire-safety, cooking appliances account for almost half of accidental fires in the UK, a staggering risk which the hood aims to mitigate by switching off the electrical hob before the fire started. A safety feature that’s in very high demand, especially in rented or shared accommodation, such as student accommodation, which has seven times higher fire risk, according to Firemark.

“Our starting point has always been offering stylish hoods with silent and exceptional kitchen ventilation, but we believe a cooker hood should be so much more. With almost half of house fires originating from kitchen appliances, and with all the new research highlighting the dangers of indoor pollution, we felt it vital to bring a new standard of care that looks after the wellbeing of our customers. That is why we are launching a cooker hood that operates automatically, shuts down any electrical hob when it senses a fire risk, allows temperature monitoring on the work-top for smart-cooking and ensure a healthy indoor climate, through our air quality monitor.” says Hårvard Augensen CEO of RørosHetta.

    Air Quality Features

The new RørosHetta SENSE has 11 sensors that measure a range of air quality features, such as fine particles (PM2.5), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), eCO2, humidity, temperature as well as movement.

World’s Smartest Cooker Hood Wins KBB Innovation Award, Family-owned Norwegian company RørosHetta, on The Table Read

In addition, it has automatic LED lights with colour temperature rendering ability to adapt to the kitchen style or mood. The hoods are also environmentally friendly with A++ energy rating and come with a 5- year warranty as standard.

All the hood functions are automatic and operates fully without using the smart app , but for those interested the app allows remote control, customisation of extraction speed & light settings and cloud-integration, should users want to collect and view their air quality history.

The sensors notify the user of fire risk or air-quality issues by sending an alert to their phone, as well as an e-mail notification to selected users, which is also an important feature for carers and landlords. Some of the Røroshetta SENSE models are already available for purchase in the UK in Magnet Stores.

  • Lake District Garden Bar To Undergo Four Phase Transformation, Revealing The Largest Bar In The Lakes With The Best View

Lake District Garden Bar To Undergo Four Phase Transformation, Revealing The Largest Bar In The Lakes With The Best View

Overlooking the stunning Lake Windermere on Bowness Bay, Lake View Garden Bar will become the largest bar launch in the region with 480 covers across three floors, once its four-phase renovation is complete.

    Lake View Garden Bar

The expansion, led by Hargreaves Enterprises Ltd with a self-funded £1.5 million investment, will see the creation of two new modern terraces at the front of the venue, overlooking the water. And interior spaces created from renovations of the existing house. The development will be in keeping with the Lakes’ traditional features and will upcycle original features from the house, including floorboards, beams, doors and stone to use across the four-phase site.

Throughout the development, Hargreaves Enterprises will also look to increase the sustainability of the venue with ground source heat pumps, and new period double glazing, they are also working alongside Ambleside University, in 2022, to align the business model and explore and understand customer perception into what makes or contributes to a bar or restaurant being Carbon Zero. This project aims to deliver actionable results, which can translate onto the menu, including the introduction of low carbon elements to both the food and drinks offerings. Furthermore, the expansion will create more jobs for locals, as well as give existing staff the opportunity to develop themselves professionally.

Set in a prime location within the Lake District, in the bustling tourist town of Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake View Garden Bar is set on the shore of Windermere. With plans to more than double the site’s capacity, the first phase of the development will launch in April 2022, with a refurb of the current ground floor site (140 covers).

    Lake View Garden Bar

    Addition Of New Floor Terrace

Phase two will see the addition of a brand-new first-floor terrace and bar (120 covers), ready for spring. And for summer 2022 the third part will open with the unveiling of the interior of the house on the first floor, providing another 80 covers. The final phase, complete for spring 2023, will bring a large-scale wrap-around terrace adding a further 140 covers.

Founder Stephen Hargreaves CEO and Founder of Hargreaves Enterprises Ltd comments on the development “This is a huge expansion for Lake View Garden Bar, the site’s capacity is more than doubling and we are adding two more levels, all offering prominent sunset views of Lake Windermere.  This development is the perfect location, right opposite of the beautiful Bowness Bay. The Lake District has over 15.8 million visitors per year and over 1 million of them go past our site – we can offer tourists and locals alike the delight of enjoying food and drink in a very special location. Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is a magnificent, terracotta Grade II listed building with a history dating back to 1890, when it first opened as The Refuge Assurance Company headquarters. The grand clock tower at the centre of its striking Victorian architecture is an unmistakable landmark on Manchester’s skyline. All 270 loft-style bedrooms, including 11 suites, were designed to make the most of the stunning, double and triple-height ceilings.

Other original, period features including glazed bricks, tiles and faience, stained glass and carved wooden staircases, meet contemporary fittings and interiors, including a three-metre-tall bronze horse by artist Sophie Dickens which sits in the lobby. The piece denotes a horse-and-carriage ‘turning circle’ that once stood on the spot.

    About The Refuge by Volta

The Refuge is a public bar and dining room set in 10,000 square foot of breath-taking space at Kimpton Clocktower. It’s about a simple devotion to great food and drink, and an extraordinary transformation of one of the city’s grandest spaces – all designed for the people of Manchester. The curators of the space are the masterminds behind the multi-award-winning Volta in West Didsbury – the DJs turned award-winning restaurateurs, Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford of “Unabombers” fame.

The Refuge is located in one of Manchester’s most iconic buildings – the former offices of the Refuge Assurance on Oxford Street, which was constructed in stages between 1891 and 1932. The building has been subject to a painstaking renovation, restoring a feast of original details in glorious terracotta, faience, marble and glazed brick. Modern design has been woven carefully into the space by Luke and Justin who are masters at creating the perfect atmosphere for enjoying their very special food and drink. The result in an exceptional all day dining and drinking space for eating, meeting, relaxing, working, toasting… and perhaps a bit of dancing.

  • Theaster Gates Design Revealed for 2022 Serpentine Pavilion

Theaster Gates Design Revealed for 2022 Serpentine Pavilion

Today, plans were revealed for Black Chapel, the 21st Serpentine Pavilion designed by Chicago based artist Theaster Gates. Black Chapel is realized with the architectural support of Adjaye Associates and will open to the public on Friday, June 10, 2022 with Goldman Sachs supporting the annual project for the eighth consecutive year.

    The Serpentine Pavilion

Drawing inspiration from the significance of the great kilns of Stoke-on-Trent, Gates’s Pavilion will pay homage to British craft and manufacturing traditions. While the structure of the Pavilion will predominantly be made of wood, the Pavilion’s design alludes to the performative and meditative qualities of a small chapel. An operating bell, originating from the demolished St. Laurence Church on Chicago’s South Side, will be placed next to the entrance of the Pavilion and will be used to call, signal and announce performances and activations.

A single source of light from an oculus will create a sanctuary-like environment for reflection and communion. Conceived as a platform for participation, live performances, with an emphasis on music and public engagement, Black Chapel will continue the artist’s ongoing practice of space-making through urban and architectural interventions.

Theaster Gates Design Revealed for 2022 Serpentine Pavilion on The Table Read

    Black Chapel

Black Chapel is the culmination of Serpentine’s collaboration with London art institutions and galleries The Victoria and Albert Museum, Whitechapel Gallery and White Cube, to realize a multi-venue London presentation of The Question of Clay of the artist’s work across 2021-2022.

Theaster Gates said: “The name Black Chapel is important because it reflects the invisible parts of my artistic practice. It acknowledges the role that sacred music and the sacred arts have had on my practice, and the collective quality of these emotional and communal initiatives. Black Chapel also suggests that in these times there could be a space where one could rest from the pressures of the day and spend time in quietude. I have always wanted to build spaces that consider the power of sound and music as a healing mechanism and emotive force that allows people to enter a space of deep reflection and/or deep participation.”

Reflecting on his oeuvre, the Serpentine Pavilion 2022 designed by Theaster Gates shares the same title as a commission Gates received in 2019, from the late museum director and curator Okwui Enwezor to activate the central atrium of museum Haus der Kunst, Munich, originally built for the Nazi Regime. This project was an attempt to bring Black spiritual life to the museum.

Throughout the Summer, the Serpentine Pavilion 2022 will become a platform for Serpentine’s program which will feature the return of Park Nights, the interdisciplinary platform for live encounters in music, poetry and dance, running alongside Serpentine’s Education and Civic activations including Family Workshops and Community Day.

    Serpentine

Bettina Korek, Chief Executive, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, said: “We are honored to undertake this remarkable project with leading visual artist Theaster Gates. One of the most significant voices working today, Gates’ praxis combines formalism, conceptualism and powerful impact felt throughout the communities in which he works and beyond. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Black Chapel as a platform for engagement, spirituality and togetherness.”

This year’s Pavilion selection was made by Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist, CEO Bettina Korek, Director of Construction and Special Projects Julie Burnell, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Practice Yesomi Umolu, and Project Curator Natalia Grabowska together with advisors Sir David Adjaye OBE and David Glover.

The Pavilion will be designed to minimize its carbon footprint and environmental impact, in line with Serpentine’s sustainability policy. The predominantly timber structure will be light-weight and fully demountable, with a focus on sustainably-sourced materials and the reusability of the structure as a whole after its time installed at Serpentine. While the Pavilion begins its life in Kensington Gardens, it will be re-sited to a permanent location in the future.

Serpentine would also like to acknowledge the work and dedication of the late architect Richard Rogers to this yearly commission. Rogers was an integral part of the Serpentine Pavilion team and served as an Advisor since 2017.

    Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates (b. 1973) creates works that engage with space theory, land development, sculpture and performance. Drawing on his interest and training in urban planning and preservation, the artist redeems spaces that have been left behind. His work contends with the notion of Black space as a formal exercise, one defined by collective desire, artistic agencyand the tactics of a pragmatist.

In 2010, Gates created the Rebuild Foundation, a non-profit platform for art, cultural development and neighbourhood transformation that supports artists and strengthens communities through free arts programming and innovative cultural amenities on Chicago’s South Side.

    Gates Exhibitions

Gates has exhibited and performed at The Victoria and Albert Museum (2021), London, UK; Whitechapel Gallery (2013 and 2021), London, UK; Tate Liverpool, UK (2020); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2020); Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis (2019); Palais de Tokyo Paris, France (2019); Sprengel Museum Hannover, Germany (2018); Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018); National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA (2017); Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada (2016); Fondazione Prada, Milan, Italy (2016); Punta della Dogana, Venice, Italy (2013) and dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany (2012).

Gates is the twelfth recipient of the Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts (2021). In 2020, Gates received the Crystal Award for his leadership in creating sustainable communities. He was the winner of the Artes Mundi 6 Prize and a recipient of the Légion d’Honneur in 2017. He was awarded the Nasher Prize for Sculpture 2018, as well as the Urban Land Institute’s J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. Gates is a professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Visual Arts and serves as the Senior Advisor for Cultural Innovation and Advisor to the Dean at the Harris School of Public Policy.

    Serpentine Pavilion

This pioneering commission, which began in 2000 with Zaha Hadid, has presented the first UK structures by some of the biggest names in international architecture. In recent years it has grown into a highly-anticipated showcase for emerging talents, from last year’s Sumayya Vally, Counterspace (South Africa), the youngest architect to be commissioned, and Frida Escobedo (Mexico), to Diébédo Francis Kéré (Burkina Faso) and Bjarke Ingels (Denmark), whose 2016 Pavilion was the most visited architectural and design exhibition in the world. The Serpentine Pavilion 2022 follows previous commissions by Olafur Eliason with Kjetil Thorsen, 2006, and Ai Weiwei with Herzog & de Meuron, 2012, among other cultural figures.

In 2021, the Pavilion program evolved beyond its physical location for the first time and expanded with a series of Fragments placed across London. It also saw the launch of Support Structures for Support Structures, a fellowship program initiated by Serpentine that supports up to ten artists and collectives working at the intersection of art, spatial politics and community practice. The Pavilion program has evolved over the years as a commissioning platform for the Serpentine’s innovative, experimental, interdisciplinary, live, community and family programs.

The commission will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with contributions by leading writers, poets and specialists in art and architecture.

  • Virgile and Partners Designs New Luxury Third Space Location in London

Virgile and Partners Designs New Luxury Third Space Location in London

Virgile and Partners, the retail and hospitality design specialist, has designed the latest club for Third Space – London’s luxury health club group. Third Space. The new venue, located in London’s affluent Mayfair district, opened its doors last week, providing a bespoke and high-end wellness experience for its clientele, and is the group’s seventh location.

Situated on Curzon Street, Third Space Mayfair makes a sizable impact with its 11,000 square feet venue, which covers two floors and hosts five training areas fitted with the latest gym equipment and designed with a contemporary, industrial feel. It is Third Space’s most technologically advanced space yet and features a face recognition entry system and UV-treated fresh air among its smart features.

    Third Space Mayfair

Virgile and Partners Designs New Luxury Third Space Location in London on The Table Read

Third Space Mayfair marks a new design category for Virgile and Partners who are best known for their retail and hospitality sector design work. They have delivered an impactful and unforgettable impression through bold and luxurious design that preserves many of Third Space’s signature brand elements alongside new memorable design features, high-end materials, and detailing, which integrate an extra sense of premium hospitality and style to the superior fitness and exercising services the club offers.

Virgile and Partners chose a palette of raw stone finishes, including slate, terrazzo and marble, and combined them with satin bronze inlays to create the luxury Mayfair look. Illuminated mirror panels and linear track lighting make the gym floor feel infinite and more dynamic while curved walnut lockers add elegance and a residential touch to the changing experience

The reception area was designed to have a ‘wow factor’ more associated with a five-star hotel rather than a health club while sculptural forms in the furniture and staircase add elements of sophistication and intrigue.

Virgile and Partners’ goal was to align the design to the neighbourhood and its specific affluent and discerning clientele.

    The Design Factor

Commenting on the design, Ewald Damen, Creative Director and Partner at Virgile and Partners, said: “We had a clear goal for the design of the Mayfair club, epitomise the energetic health club environment Third Space is known for, and elevate it through an upgraded sense of premium hospitality. We selected a design and material palette that merges bold and industrial features such as the architectural metal staircase and the refined bespoke cast reception desk. The design reflects an outstanding level of attention to detail with its seating areas and dressing rooms materialised in high-end stone, metal finishes and walnut materials, ultimately comprising Third Space’s individual style with the high-end expectations of the Mayfair community.”

Colin Waggett, CEO of Third Space, said: “We’re really excited to be opening our seventh Third Space club in Mayfair, at Number One Curzon Street. Third Space Mayfair will epitomise exclusivity and personalisation – themes which will resonate with the local clientele. We’ve selected truly expert trainers to optimise the training experience, and designed in all the critical touches of luxury that make every visit a great experience.”

Third Space Mayfair is Virgile and Partners’ first assignment from the health club operator and demonstrates the agency’s ability to capture a client’s creative brief and deliver a beautiful and bespoke end result, regardless of industry sector.

Virgile and Partners were appointed without a pitch and are now working with Third Space to upgrade their existing Marylebone club due to open next year.

“Our site’s newly incorporated functions and capabilities enhance the experience and decision-making process for potential clients,” said the Business Development Director of Sports, Sean Walter. “The ability to search by sport instead of just venues and the addition of audio and visual elements that elevate our venues saves time and provides the next level of customer service while embodying what our destination is all about.”

Re-designed based on data and industry best practices, additions include quick view for a sneak peek at listings without a full click, an algorithm-based ranking system for member listings, user generated content to better illustrate the destination and Pure Florida merchandise at retail.
