Exactly thirty years ago today, on February 27, 1996, two Game Boy titles—Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green—launched exclusively in Japan. What began as a modest project inspired by childhood insect collecting has grown into the highest-grossing media franchise in history, generating well over $147 billion across games, merchandise, anime, trading cards, and more.

The Origins: A Boy, Bugs, and a Dream

The story of Pokémon begins with Satoshi Tajiri. Growing up in Machida, a suburb of Tokyo, Tajiri spent his childhood exploring fields and forests, catching insects and trading them with friends. As Japan urbanized rapidly during the 1970s and 1980s, those natural spaces disappeared, and with them the simple joy of discovery. Tajiri wanted to preserve that feeling.

In 1989 he co-founded Game Freak, initially a self-published gaming magazine that later became a small development studio. After creating several modest titles, Tajiri became fascinated by the Game Boy’s link cable feature, which allowed players to exchange data between cartridges. He envisioned a game where players would catch, train, and trade creatures—recreating the thrill of finding rare bugs and showing them off to friends.

Working with longtime collaborator and artist Ken Sugimori, composer Junichi Masuda, and producer Tsunekazu Ishihara of Creatures Inc., the team spent six difficult years developing the first games. Financial struggles nearly ended the project, but Nintendo stepped in with crucial support. On February 27, 1996, Pocket Monsters Red and Green released in Japan. A polished third version, Pocket Monsters Blue, followed in 1996, and the international versions—Pokémon Red and Blue—arrived in North America and Europe in 1998–1999.

Explosive Growth: From 151 to Over 1,000 Pokémon

The original games featured 151 creatures. Today, the National Pokédex includes 1,025 unique Pokémon species spread across nine generations and regions inspired by real-world locations—from the Japan-based Kanto to the Spain-inspired Paldea.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game, launched in 1996, has printed billions of cards and remains one of the most popular collectible card games globally. Merchandise—plush toys, clothing, figures, and more—has fueled an enormous commercial empire.

The 2016 release of Pokémon GO turned the franchise into a global outdoor phenomenon, encouraging millions of people to explore their neighborhoods while catching virtual creatures. It remains one of the most successful mobile games ever made.

Pokémon Day 2026: A Year-Long Celebration

The Pokémon Company has declared 2026 a massive year-long anniversary celebration. Special “Day Out” family events and “Night Out” fan experiences are being held around the world. Today’s Pokémon Presents livestream revealed new announcements, including the Nintendo Switch release of faithful remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, allowing players to return to the original Kanto region with updated features.

Anniversary merchandise includes special Trading Card Game collections, stamped promo cards, booster packs, and official 30th anniversary logos created for every single Pokémon species.
