Plot and Philosophy: Inside the World of Carrick Ares

The narrative follows Carrick Ares, a man who grows up entirely devoid of belief systems. However, a sudden, near-fatal car accident plunges him into the afterlife, triggering a profound and disorienting existential crisis. Confined to hospital care, Carrick’s primary interlocutor is Dr. Paul Turnstone, a psychiatrist with whom he navigates complex spiritual and scientific theories.

Even as Carrick struggles with basic daily tasks, he remains fiercely convinced that he has unlocked the meaning of life. At his lowest ebb, he channels these revelations into a manuscript titled The Religion of Self-Enlightenment. The text serves as a sweeping examination of human religious history, offering frameworks to heal both individual and global crises. Along the way, readers encounter literary echoes of T.S. Eliot’s Prufrock and the surreal revelations reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, exploring the delicate fragility of the human spirit.

Exploring Themes of Consciousness and Beauty

At its core, The ROSE invites readers to rethink human purpose, identity, and the omnipresence of beauty. During a pivotal exchange with Dr. Turnstone—who acts as a burgeoning apostle to Carrick’s philosophy—the protagonist muses on the untapped potential of beauty in everyday moments. Scialom posits that recognizing this beauty serves as a gateway to true spiritual awakening.

The author’s connection to her work extends far beyond the page. She shares that a remarkable 2016 photograph taken at the Paradise Nature Reserve in Cambridge mirrors the depiction of Jesus on the novel’s cover, symbolizing what she describes as an incredible personal evolution of consciousness sparked by the writing process.
