On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Johnny Depp stars as a hauntingly different Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s dark cinematic reimagining of A Christmas Carol, arriving exclusively in theatres on November 13, 2026.
Johnny Depp stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming dark fantasy reimagining titled Ebenezer. Directed by Ti West from a script by Nathaniel Halpern, the film opens in cinemas on November 13, 2026.

A Fresh Spin on a Timeless Holiday Classic
Charles Dickens published the original novella A Christmas Carol in December 1843, creating a cultural touchstone that shaped modern holiday traditions. That classic text introduced the archetypal miser and the concept of a transformative holiday redemption arc.
This new cinematic adaptation leans heavily into the darker gothic undercurrents of the original book. Director Ti West emphasizes the eerie, macabre supernatural elements rather than traditional holiday cheer.
The narrative centers on a wealthy London businessman who isolates himself from humanity. He callously dismisses his struggling clerk, ignores family ties, and turns away charity workers on a freezing Christmas Eve.
His solitary evening is violently interrupted by a series of spectral visitations. The ghost of his former business partner and the three spirits of Christmas drag him through terrifying visions of what was, what is, and what is yet to come.
These haunting nocturnal encounters force the aging cynic into a brutal spiritual reckoning. He must confront the full weight of his greed before time runs out and his soul is permanently sealed.
Standing on the Shoulders of Cinematic History
The Charles Dickens novella remains one of the most adapted properties in entertainment history, dating back to early silent shorts like the 1901 British film Scrooge, or, Marley’s Ghost. Over the decades, legendary actors have put their own stamp on the cynical miser.
Alastair Sim delivered a definitive, critically revered portrayal in the 1951 British version. Other iconic interpretations include George C. Scott in 1984, Albert Finney in the 1970 musical Scrooge, and Michael Caine starring alongside a cast of puppets in 1992’s beloved The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Modern iterations have ranged from Bill Murray’s cynical executive in the 1988 comedy Scrooged to Disney’s 2009 motion-capture animated feature starring Jim Carrey. Ti West’s upcoming version separates itself from these predecessors by focusing specifically on atmospheric horror and gothic dread.

An All-Star Cast Brings Dickensian London to Life
The production features a massive ensemble cast alongside Depp. Sir Ian McKellen stars as the doomed business partner Jacob Marley. Andrea Riseborough takes on the role of the Ghost of Christmas Past, while Tramell Tillman appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Daisy Ridley portrays the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
The supporting line-up includes Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit alongside Daisy Ridley playing Emily Cratchit, and Sam Claflin as Scrooge’s nephew Fred. Additional cast members feature Charlie Murphy and Ellie Bamber as the Fezziwigs, Arthur Conti as a young Ebenezer, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Produced by Emma Watts, filming took place across Dublin and London.
