In that role, she played a key part in launching Digital Underground in the UK and collaborated closely with legendary producer Andrew Weatherall.

Her career continued at MCA/Universal as a senior A&R manager, where she managed and developed major talents including Dina Carroll, Carleen Anderson, and Juan Atkins. At MCA Publishing, she signed and nurtured globally successful acts such as Zero 7, Basement Jaxx, and Air. Rothwell also supported songwriters like Rob Davis during his work on hits including Spiller’s “If This Ain’t Love” and Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” and played a pivotal role in connecting Eg White with Adele, contributing to the creation of “Chasing Pavements.”

Despite her success behind the scenes, songwriting remained Rothwell’s deepest passion. This inner drive ultimately led her to launch Empire Child as a long-form artist project. The forthcoming album is produced by Madrid-based jazz professor and producer Mariano Diaz, blending Rothwell’s personal storytelling with sophisticated musical arrangements.

Empire Child first introduced itself with the single “Trace the Race,” a reflective piece exploring identity, ancestry, and belonging. Drawing from her own heritage—her mother’s Indo-Jamaican roots as part of the Windrush generation and her father’s journey from apartheid-era Cape Town, South Africa—the song examines themes of migration, legacy, and the universal truth that every person’s ancestors were once immigrants.
