On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Duncan Stewart’s Facing Retirement – How to Thrive and Survive is the warm, practical guide every retiree needs—packed with real stories from diverse retirees, flexible tools, and empowering steps to transform uncertainty into a vibrant, meaningful next chapter full of purpose, connection, and joy.
Facing Retirement – How to Survive and Thrive
Retirement marks one of life’s most significant shifts. After decades of structured work, routines, and professional identity, many face a mix of freedom and uncertainty. Questions about purpose, finances, health, relationships, and daily meaning often arise. For those approaching or already in retirement, Duncan Stewart’s book Facing Retirement – How to Survive and Thrive arrives as a timely, empathetic companion.

Written by septuagenarian Duncan Stewart, the book draws from his own experiences and those of diverse retirees. It challenges the stereotype of retirement as a slow decline, reframing it as a vibrant season of possibility, growth, and renewed purpose.

The Growing Need for Guidance in Retirement
In the UK, the demographic reality underscores the book’s relevance. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), around 12 million people were aged 66 or over in mid-2022, with projections showing this figure rising to 13.7 million by mid-2032—an increase of 1.7 million, or about 13.8%. This growth, influenced by state pension age changes and longer lifespans, highlights the urgency for resources that help people not just survive but actively thrive in later years.
Many enter retirement with excitement tempered by anxiety: Who am I without my job title? How will I fill my days meaningfully? Will my savings last? How do I maintain health and connections? Stewart’s voice speaks directly to these concerns, offering grounded reassurance rather than generic platitudes.
What Sets This Book Apart
Unlike many retirement guides that push one-size-fits-all advice or focus solely on finances, Stewart’s approach is holistic, warm, and flexible. It blends real-life stories from a wide range of retirees—including singles, couples, adventurers, homebodies, late bloomers, and those facing health or family challenges—with practical, budget-friendly tools.
The book respects readers’ existing wisdom and individuality. Tools are simple, actionable, and adaptable: use what resonates, skip what doesn’t, and revisit sections as life evolves. There’s no pressure for expensive hobbies, exotic travel, or complex systems—just realistic steps for real circumstances.
