On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Fellow Mortals released their lushly orchestrated debut album Stella’s Birth-Day, a beautifully crafted 10” vinyl al-book that reimagines Jonathan Swift’s intimate birthday poems for Stella through rich, atmospheric avant-pop.
Trashcan Sinatras frontman Francis Reader and Noonday Underground’s Simon Dine have joined forces as Fellow Mortals, delivering a deeply atmospheric and literary-inspired project that fuses elegant orchestration, electronic textures, and heartfelt songwriting.
Their debut album, Stella’s Birth-Day, arrived as a limited-edition 10” vinyl “al-book” on April 17, 2026, via Hands Full Recordings / Believe. The release pairs 14 original tracks with Jonathan Swift’s original poetry in a beautifully presented hardback format that doubles as the record sleeve.

Inspiration from Swift’s Intimate Birthday Poems
The project draws directly from the series of personal birthday poems Jonathan Swift wrote for Esther “Stella” Johnson, his close companion and rumored partner. These works stand out for their emotional honesty, reflections on love, aging, friendship, and the passage of time, shifting in tone from playful early verses to more somber later ones.
Reader and Dine were moved by the poems’ directness and anti-pretentious spirit. They set out to create a modern musical response that captures the same range of feeling — from light intimacy to profound seriousness — while exploring the fleeting nature of human connection. The timing is deliberate: the album lands exactly 300 years after Swift presented one of the dedicated writings to Stella.
Cinematic Opener “Dancing Days” Sets the Tone
The latest single, “Dancing Days”, serves as the expansive, lushly orchestrated opening track. It blends rich organic instrumentation with subtle electronic sound design and Reader’s distinctive, resonant vocals. Cinematic and emotionally poised, the song establishes the album’s signature atmosphere of classical sensitivity meeting contemporary production.
It follows previous singles “A Better State” and “Some Lasting Pleasure,” building anticipation for the full 14-track collection.

A Transatlantic Collaboration Rooted in History
Reader and Dine’s musical partnership goes back decades. In 1988, a teenage Simon Dine signed The Trashcan Sinatras to Go! Discs as an A&R scout and helped release their acclaimed debut album Cake. Over the years, they have collaborated on numerous Trashcan Sinatras tracks, and Reader has appeared as a vocalist on Noonday Underground albums including Surface Noise (2002) and Sing It From The Mountain (2023).
For Stella’s Birth-Day, the pair worked remotely between studios in Pasadena, California, and Manchester, UK. Trashcan Sinatras lead guitarist Paul Livingston adds melodic guitar contributions to several tracks, including “Dancing Days.”
The music draws sonic inspiration from the ambitious, uncompromising spirit of Talk Talk, the ambient textures of Ultramarine, and the emotional depth of John Grant’s Pale Green Ghosts era.
