On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, in Fractured Virtues, Keith Dobson delivers a gripping military thriller where British soldiers and a desperate cartel leader collide in the treacherous Belizean jungle, forcing fractured loyalties, brutal betrayals, and impossible moral choices in a merciless fight for survival.
Fractured Virtues
Keith Dobson’s latest novel, Fractured Virtues, delivers a pulse-pounding, character-driven thriller that plunges readers into the treacherous intersection of military duty, cartel warfare, and moral ambiguity. Published in 2025 by Foreshore Publishing (under the RiverRun imprint), this second installment in Dobson’s emerging body of military fiction builds on the success of his debut, Crossing the Line, and cements his reputation as a commanding new voice in the genre.

Chaos in the Belizean Jungle
Fractured Virtues unfolds against the brutal, humid backdrop of Belize’s jungles, where two explosive storylines collide.
On one side, the Sinaloa drug cartel’s fragile power structure crumbles after leader Satan and his lieutenant Mikel vanish—presumed dead. Leadership falls to Nardus, a Kriol man of unexpected heritage, who must prevent an all-out war with the rival Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación). When Jalisco’s tattooed executioners, the Mará, murder Nardus’s infant son and place a death contract on all Sinaloa families, Nardus embarks on a desperate race: recover missing drugs, uncover the truth about the disappearances, and execute a perilous cross-border exchange before time expires.
Parallel to this cartel intrigue runs the turbulent world of British Army personnel. Grace Byford, a determined young infantry soldier, faces an abrupt career disruption when ordered home on compassionate leave—only to be diverted into a covert Special Investigation Branch (SIB) probe. She teams up with three signallers—Jack, Lewis, and Stan—investigating the suspicious disappearance of their colleague, Gareth Jones.
As Grace delves deeper, she exposes tensions, hidden secrets, and an illicit trade in stolen military equipment that links the soldiers directly to the escalating cartel violence. Jack’s past entanglement with Satan resurfaces, pulling Grace, Jack, and their unit into a deadly convergence with Nardus’s survival bid.
What starts as a missing-person inquiry spirals into a merciless fight for life in a remote jungle clearing. Amid crocodile-infested rivers, clandestine border crossings, and shifting alliances, the narrative hurtles toward a harrowing climax where courage, sacrifice, and fractured morality decide who survives.
Themes and Style: Moral Complexity in a Broken World
Dobson’s prose is sharp, unflinching, and propulsive. Dialogue crackles with raw intensity, capturing the immediate pressures of characters under fire. The novel explores profound themes—loyalty versus survival, honour amid deception, justice in chaos, betrayal, and redemption—posing moral dilemmas in every chapter that challenge readers to question virtue in a fractured world.
Characters emerge as astonishingly real: flawed, human, and unforgettable. Their internal struggles, decisions, and relationships create an immersive emotional pull, making it easy to lose track of time in the story’s natural, compelling flow.
A Life Forged in Service Fuels Authentic Storytelling

Keith Dobson’s background lends unparalleled credibility to his writing. He enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals at age fifteen, serving as a Radio Telegraphist in Germany, Belize, and Cyprus. At nineteen, he experienced active service during the 1982 Falklands War following Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia—an event that profoundly shaped his commitment to historical and operational accuracy in military narratives.
After leaving the Army, Dobson transitioned into policing, training as a detective in West Yorkshire Police before advancing through Essex Police and joining the Metropolitan Police Service. He rose to Detective Superintendent in Specialist Operations at New Scotland Yard, where he led Counter Terrorism Protective Security. In this senior role, he conducted threat and risk assessments across the UK and internationally, collaborating with government departments and global partners.
This rare blend of frontline military experience and high-level counterterrorism expertise infuses Dobson’s fiction with meticulous detail, raw authenticity, and unflinching realism. His characters operate in worlds that feel lived-in rather than invented, drawing directly from the author’s decades in high-stakes environments.
Building a Legacy in Military Fiction
Following strong reader feedback for Crossing the Line and Fractured Virtues, Dobson is completing his third novel, Hidden in the Ashes, slated for release later in 2026. He is also co-authoring a non-fiction military history title, The 5th Brigade’s Communicators: 205 Signal Squadron and the 1982 Conflict, due from Pen & Sword in Spring 2027.
Beyond writing, Dobson continues contributing to public service through the HMICFRS policing inspectorate and leads educational tours across the UK and Europe. He resides in the Derbyshire Dales with his wife, enjoys countryside walks, and cherishes time with his two adult children and granddaughter.
For fans of military thrillers who crave authenticity, high-stakes action, and deep character exploration, Fractured Virtues stands as a must-read. In the words of its own compelling tagline: A country on the brink. A cartel leader rising from the shadows. Two soldiers caught in a merciless game of survival. Keith Dobson’s bold vision delivers an absorbing, authoritative ride through the dark underbelly of duty and deception.
