On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, composer Hans Zimmer is trading the legendary orchestral style of John Williams for an entirely original score in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
Composer Hans Zimmer is creating an entirely original musical score for HBO’s upcoming adaptation of The Philosopher’s Stone. He is collaborating closely with fellow Bleeding Fingers Music composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman on the project.
This bold creative direction means the upcoming television series will break away completely from the legendary orchestral framework established by John Williams. Williams crafted the foundational sound of the franchise, most notably authoring the universally recognized “Hedwig’s Theme”.

Stepping Out of the Shadow of John Williams
Following in the footsteps of John Williams is an intimidating assignment for any artist. Williams shaped the cinematic identity of the wizarding world with a grand, magical, and sweeping orchestral style that remains deeply beloved by millions.
Zimmer has spoken candidly about the impossibility of trying to replicate that specific genius. Instead of attempting a direct imitation, Zimmer and his team are purposefully staying as far away as possible from those classic film motifs to build something entirely original.
Drawing on Past Experience With Legacy Icons
Zimmer faced a remarkably similar challenge when he signed on to score Zack Snyder’s 2013 Superman film, Man of Steel. Taking on a character previously defined by John Williams’ legendary 1978 Superman score caused initial panic for the composer.
Director Zack Snyder ultimately helped liberate Zimmer from the crushing weight of legacy expectations. Snyder reminded him simply to treat the project as a movie and focus on creating authentic art.
That liberating mindset led to a grounded, deeply human score for Man of Steel that forged its own distinct identity. Zimmer intends to apply that exact same philosophy to the halls of Hogwarts.

Balancing Freshness and Longtime Fandom
The production plan to adapt one book per season gives Zimmer, Talve, and Rozman plenty of room to build evolving themes. Their music can grow alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione as the narrative expands.
At the same time, the creative team has acknowledged the immense responsibility they carry. In a joint statement, the composers noted that the musical legacy of the franchise is a touchstone for creators everywhere.
They aim to bring audiences closer to the magic of the setting while honoring the historic foundation that came before. Fan reactions remain a fascinating mix of excitement for a fresh auditory identity and deep nostalgia for past motifs.
