Directed by award-winning filmmaker and theatre director Alex Helfrecht (The White King, A Winter’s Journey), Lost Watches is a bold exploration of memory, mental health, and mourning, delivered with biting wit and emotional resonance.

A Surreal Tale of Grief and Memory

Lost Watches centers on Allen, a young man teetering on the edge of adulthood and emotional collapse. Reeling from his mother’s death and his father’s absence, Allen faces the imminent repossession of his family home—a physical and emotional anchor he’s unprepared to lose. Over one hallucinatory weekend, his reality fractures as he’s visited by spectral figures and engages in surreal conversations with a sculpted head of William Burroughs, voiced by Jason Isaacs. This unsettling yet darkly funny narrative probes profound questions: Can the dead help us heal, or do they merely linger in the dust? How do we distinguish memory from invention? And how do we release the people, places, and pain that threaten to consume us?

Allchurch’s script, developed from a short play with Betty Media Ltd., blends rich theatrical language with absurdist humor and gut-wrenching emotion. The intimate 90-seat Park90 space at Park Theatre amplifies the play’s intensity, immersing audiences in Allen’s spiraling psyche. Lorenzo Allchurch, a British/Italian writer and actor, makes a striking debut with Lost Watches, both as its playwright and as Allen. A graduate of St Anne’s College, Oxford, Allchurch’s career began with roles opposite Mark Rylance in Richard III at Shakespeare’s Globe and the West End’s Apollo Theatre. He also played young Gary Kasparov in the Donmar Warehouse’s The Machine and starred in Helfrecht’s dystopian film The White King. His writing, which explores grief, identity, and the porous boundary between reality and imagination, marks him as a bold new voice in British theatre. Allchurch’s 2023 short film Bollocks, co-written with Hugo Kilner, is set to tour festivals in 2025, and several of his scripts are in development.
