Jonny Couch Delivers Power-Pop Mastery On New Album, Where The Sidewalk Ends

Independent power-pop artist Jonny Couch breaks a seven-year hiatus with his full-length release Where The Sidewalk Ends. The ten-track collection arrives via Damaged Sofa Music, anchored by the lead single Overwhelmed. The track sets the tone for the entire project by combining upbeat melodies with lyrics focused on interpersonal friction.

Overwhelmed

Couch crafted the track around the concept of a relationship unraveling during real-time communication. The songwriting draws influence from late-seventies and early-eighties new wave and power-pop acts like Joe Jackson and Nick Lowe.

Musical arrangements rely on jangling guitar lines paired with a dense, driving rhythm section. Couch intentionally wanted to capture the bouncy, danceable spirit of tracks like Fine Young Cannibals’ Good Thing while keeping the tempo fast and urgent. The lyrics address mundane yet frustrating communication hurdles, such as trying to talk through arguments while dealing with distractions.

Production and Studio Collaboration

Recording sessions for Overwhelmed took place at Landline Recording in Hoboken, New Jersey. Jon Chinn engineered, mixed, and produced the track. Chinn brought a background of working with indie acts like Wild Child, Lomelda, David Ramirez, and Gina Chavez.

The broader album utilizes four distinct producers to guide its sound. Alongside Chinn, the project features contributions from Peter Mavrogeorgis, Dan Haag, and Jonas Wilson. Wilson also handled mastering duties at Mr. Pink Records in Bastrop, Texas.

Where The Sidewalk Ends

Where The Sidewalk Ends compiles recent compositions alongside established live staples like Sweet Charlene. New York visual artist Anne Muntges provided the cover artwork for the release. Muntges is known for intricate ink drawings and large-scale installations featured in the reference text Women Who Rock.

Before establishing himself as a solo singer-songwriter in 2016, Couch played drums on the New York City rock circuit. His solo output includes the Animal Instinct EP and the full-length album Mystery Man.
