Following a wave of critical anticipation, French singer-songwriter Laura Cahen’s expanded EP, side by side, is now officially out in the world via [PIAS] Recordings. The project builds beautifully upon her previous album de l’autre côté, introducing a multi-national perspective to her distinct indie-pop universe.

At the center of this release is the standout single “Toute l’eau qui coule,” featuring British artist Shura—a track that perfectly encapsulates the project’s cross-channel brilliance.

The Chemistry Behind ‘Toute l’eau qui coule’

“Toute l’eau qui coule” serves as a masterclass in collaboration, blending vibrant rhythms, layered synthesizers, and lush strings into an incandescent pop chorus. The song acts as a fluid vocal dialogue between Cahen and Shura, striking a delicate balance between fragility and sheer vocal power.

The artistic partnership was born out of a mutual connection made after Cahen supported Shura at Bush Hall in London. Beyond their shared musical sensibilities, Cahen felt a strong imperative to team up with an artist who mirrored her identity as a female and lesbian creator. Shura’s precise, incisive, and free-flowing vocal delivery provides the perfect counter-momentum to Cahen’s performance, cementing the song as the most explicitly pop-leaning moment on the record.

A Stellar Creative Team Brings ‘Side by Side’ to Life

The five previously unreleased tracks on side by side expand Cahen’s world by bringing in acclaimed UK and US artists. To maintain a cohesive sonic identity, Cahen returned to her core creative team, tracking and producing the material in Margate, England.

The project benefits from arrangements by composer Josephine Stephenson (known for her work with Damon Albarn and Arctic Monkeys) and production by Mike Lindsay of LUMP and Tunng. The final mixes were polished by Fab Dupont in New York.

The result is a beautifully international endeavor. Beyond the stellar feature from Shura, the now-available EP boasts compelling guest appearances from Hand Habits, This Is The Kit, Saint Saviour, and Stephenson herself, making side by side a deeply rewarding listen for fans of boundary-pushing indie pop.
