On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Leigh Douglas brings her razor-sharp political satire ROTUS: Receptionist Of The United States – a hilarious and prescient one-woman takedown of conservative women in power – to London’s Park Theatre from 20 January to 7 February 2026.

ROTUS

Fresh from a sold-out, critically acclaimed run at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, queer Irish-American comedian Leigh Douglas is transferring her one-woman show ROTUS: Receptionist Of The United States to London’s Park Theatre. This timely political satire, blending stand-up, theatre, and cabaret, runs from 20 January to 7 February 2026, with press night on 21 January.

In ROTUS, Douglas writes and performs as Chastity Quirke, the fiercely loyal White House receptionist (Receptionist Of The United States) and staunch Republican. An ex-sorority chapter president determined to rise through the ranks, Chastity’s blind faith in the system begins to falter when she’s forced to confront the consequences of her unwavering allegiance and complicity.

The fictional story draws inspiration from real-life figures such as Cassidy Hutchinson (the former aide who testified against President Trump regarding the January 6th Capitol attack), Alyssa Farah, Sarah Matthews, and echoes of current press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Set against the backdrop of “trad wives” and “pick-me patriotism,” the play interrogates the pressures, contradictions, and moral consequences faced by young women in hardline conservative politics—and the role white women have played in upholding patriarchal power structures.

Critical Acclaim from the Fringe

Following its phenomenal sell-out Edinburgh Fringe 2025 run, ROTUS received glowing reviews:

  • “Funny, frightening, and disturbingly prescient” – ThreeWeeks ★★★★★
  • “A blast of political satire which will have you laughing from start to finish” – Theatre Weekly ★★★★
  • Described elsewhere as “superbly crafted, razor-sharp satire” (The Reviews Hub) and “whip-smart political satire” (The Independent).

Critics hailed it as a stand-out piece of theatre from a talent to watch.

Creative Team and Style

Directed by Fiona Kingwill (known for the 2024 Edinburgh smash hit and Soho Theatre transfer Really Good Exposure), with original music by viral American musical comedian Sarah Hester Ross, the production weaves together stand-up, theatre, and cabaret.

While rooted in political satire, ROTUS is ultimately a laugh-out-loud comedy about identity, complicity, ambition, and the courage to confront uncomfortable truths. It shows that even the ultimate “pick-me girl” might discover her true power lies not in being the only woman in the room, but in kicking the door down for everyone else.

Douglas brings a distinctive queer perspective to the work: as a proud lesbian, she notes there is something deeply queer about dragging up as the kind of Republican woman working to erode her own rights.
