Liverpool Music Month 2026 Brings Glastonbury Spirit Home To Merseyside

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Liverpool Music Month kicks off an unforgettable Liverpool Summer of Music with a month-long celebration of live gigs, major arena shows, grassroots events and community vibes.

Liverpool is set to cement its reputation as a world capital of music with the launch of Liverpool Music Month in May 2026. Running from Friday 1 to Sunday 31 May, the new city-region celebration kicks off a wider Liverpool Summer of Music 2026 programme, delivering live performances, cultural events, and community activities throughout spring and summer.

Timed to fill the gap left by Glastonbury Festival’s year off, the initiative transforms the streets, venues, and open spaces of Liverpool and the surrounding region into a vibrant musical destination.

Why Liverpool Music Month Matters

Liverpool continues to shape modern music, from the legendary Cavern Club and grassroots spaces to major arena shows. As a UNESCO City of Music, the city attracts music lovers worldwide. With around a third of Glastonbury attendees coming from Merseyside—despite the region representing just 1% of the UK population—organisers are bringing that festival energy home.

The month-long programme highlights both intimate independent venues and large-scale events, creating a true celebration of live music for locals and visitors alike.

Highlights of the 2026 Programme

Liverpool Music Month features a packed calendar, including:

• Sound City (Sat 2 – Sun 3 May) — Showcasing homegrown and international talent.
• Dark Reign Metal Fest at Birkenhead’s Future Yard (Sat 2 May).
• Baltic Weekender (Sat 30 – Sun 31 May) across venues like Camp and Furnace and Brick Street, with house, disco, techno, bass, and grime sets.

Other spotlighted performances include shows by Emmylou Harris, The Longest Johns, Kingfishr, Biird, Sunny Afternoon, James Morrison, and Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. At Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, audiences can enjoy genre-spanning gigs, including a Celebration of the Beach Boys by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Roland Gift presenting Fine Young Cannibals, Max Cooper, and US artists Hannah Wicklund and Ondara.

Major summer highlights under the Summer of Music umbrella include Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance at Anfield Stadium, Lewis Capaldi at Sefton Park, and Nile Rodgers & Chic performing outdoors at Lock and Quay in Bootle.

Twinning with New York Music Month

Liverpool Music Month is twinned with New York Music Month, an established event in New York City’s cultural calendar since 2017. This transatlantic partnership celebrates the shared heritage of two historic port cities, their musical legacies, and the new generations of artists emerging from both.

The collaboration strengthens international ties and positions both cities as global centres of creativity and cultural exchange.

Liverpool’s Enduring Musical Legacy

Music runs through Liverpool’s veins. The city has produced more chart-topping albums outside London than any other UK city. Its influence stretches from the arrival of early rock and roll records at the docks in the 1950s to today’s global stadium shows.

The new programme builds on the success of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023, which reached 162 million viewers worldwide and generated over £54 million for the local economy. Liverpool Music Month aims to recapture that energy, boosting music tourism and supporting venues, artists, and communities across the city region.

Supporting Grassroots and New Talent

An open commissioning fund will invite venues, promoters, artists, and organisations to apply for support for new events, performances, training, and creative projects. This ensures the programme reflects the full diversity of Liverpool’s music scene, from grassroots activity to large-scale productions.

Liverpool Music Month serves as the opening act for the broader Liverpool Summer of Music, running from June through August. This extended celebration will spotlight festivals, concerts, and events across the entire city region, including neighbourhoods beyond the city centre.T
