On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Manchester lo-fi indie duo Succulents have released their joyful debut single Underdog – a fuzzy, harmony-drenched college-rock gem.
Manchester’s emerging indie scene has welcomed a fresh, feel-good addition with the arrival of Succulents, a charming lo-fi college-rock duo blending fuzzy guitars, sweet harmonies, and a playful sense of nostalgia. Led by experienced songwriter Laurie Hulme and joined by Lucy Ridges, the pair have unveiled their debut single “Underdog,” a track that captures intimate creativity and restless energy in equal measure.

Who Are Succulents? Meet the Girl-and-Boy-Next-Door Indie Duo
Succulents bring together two creative voices from Manchester’s artistic community. Laurie Hulme, already known for his long-running solo project Songs For Walter and his role in the four-piece band Big Other, teams up with Lucy Ridges, an established photographer who adds a vibrant new dynamic to the music.
The duo describe themselves as a “girl-and-boy-next-door” outfit, delivering upfront plugged-in college rock riffs wrapped in candy-floss-sweet vocal harmonies. Their sound sits comfortably in the fuzzy indie-pop realm, with subtle krautrock influences that emerge in a lively motorik middle section, creating an infectious blend of warmth and energy.
Influences That Shape Succulents’ Hazy, Sparkling Sound
Drawing from a rich tapestry of cult indie touchstones, Succulents evoke the sentimentality of Belle and Sebastian while channeling the colorful, crayon-bright tones of Yo La Tengo and The Pastels. Other key inspirations include The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Field Mice, The Clean, The Courtneys, and Comet Gain.
This combination results in a signature style: hazy nostalgia fused with sparky immediacy. The music feels both deeply personal and instantly engaging, perfect for fans of heartfelt, lo-fi indie that balances introspection with joyful togetherness.

The Story Behind ‘Underdog’: Creativity in Retreat
“Underdog” emerged during a period of personal transition and reflection for Hulme. Expecting a child, he stepped away from city life and retreated to his partner’s parents’ home in the beautiful South Lakes. There, he dedicated three to four hours each day to writing and playing guitar, channeling a mix of intimacy and restlessness into the song.
The track centers on a mischievous protagonist who enjoys playfully provoking their partner, delighting in the resulting sparks. This darkly playful narrative carries a gleeful edge reminiscent of Roald Dahl’s The Twits, all delivered through warm, fuzzed-out indie-pop textures.
Originally conceived as an acoustic finger-picking number, the song evolved into something louder and more dynamic. Influences from Hulme’s time playing in a kraut-punk band called Chew Magna shine through, particularly in the nod to Can and classic krautrock middle eights.
From Bedroom Recording to Richly Textured Debut
“Underdog” began life as a simple bedroom recording in South Manchester. It was later meticulously enhanced, mixed, and refined by Laurie Hulme’s brother, Alex Hulme, whose careful studio work transformed the lo-fi foundation into a richly textured and emotionally resonant final piece.
As the first release from a growing collection of unreleased Succulents material, “Underdog” offers an inviting glimpse into the duo’s world. The single is available now via platforms including Bandcamp, marking an exciting new chapter for both artists.
Why Succulents Stand Out in the Indie Landscape

Their blend of college-rock drive, lo-fi charm, and harmonious warmth creates music that is both comforting and energizing — ideal for listeners seeking joyful indie sounds with depth and personality.
With more songs on the horizon, Succulents look set to build on this promising debut. “Underdog” successfully captures a snapshot of abundant creativity born from unusual circumstances, delivering a track that resonates with anyone who appreciates clever songwriting and fuzzy, feel-good indie vibes.
