On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Merlin’s Ninth by Tim Badgett is a captivating debut novel that weaves British aristocratic charm, vintage motor racing thrills, unbreakable family loyalty, and the high-stakes drama of a Le Mans wager into an irresistible adventure spanning decades.
Merlin’s Ninth

After more than four decades in the making, Tim Badgett’s Merlin’s Ninth has arrived as a fresh and engaging debut novel. At 75 years old and self-published through IngramSpark, the first-time author delivers a story rich in British charm, high-stakes adventure, and heartfelt themes of friendship and perseverance.

The novel centers on a reckless wager between a young English aristocrat named Merlin and an Arab prince. This impulsive bet ignites a chain of events involving a classic 1930s Bentley powered by a Merlin engine, an historic family estate, and the iconic Le Mans race. Spanning from the 1920s through a dramatic climax in 1982 and into the early 2000s, the narrative weaves together moments of gentle humor with bursts of intense action.
Readers are transported from a cozy Mews flat in Belgravia to the grand but faded Barham Hall in Norfolk, and finally to the demanding circuits of Le Mans. The story captures the elegance reminiscent of Downton Abbey while infusing the adrenaline of vintage motor racing. Eccentric aristocrats, unexpected international twists, and cinematic ambition drive the plot forward.
At its heart, Merlin’s Ninth explores friendship, loyalty, and resourcefulness. One impulsive decision sparks an adventure that reshapes lives across generations.
Compelling Characters Across Generations
Merlin serves as the central protagonist, supported by his girlfriend Sophie and a cast of vivid supporting figures. The narrative also delves into the earlier life of Merlin’s grandfather, the Earl of Ninth, as a young man and Spitfire pilot during the war. Hodgkins, the loyal batman who later becomes the family butler, plays a key role in preparing the vintage Bentley for its high-stakes competition against a Ferrari.
Strong female characters feature prominently, contributing significantly to the unfolding events. The book highlights the challenges faced by the Earl and Countess of Ninth as they reclaim and restore Barham Hall after its wartime requisition, blending personal hopes and hardships with the larger adventure.

A Story Interrupted and Revived After 45 Years
The origins of Merlin’s Ninth are nearly as intriguing as its plot. In his late twenties, while managing a restaurant on London’s King’s Road in Chelsea, Badgett encountered a group of men lingering late one evening. After offering champagne to extend their stay, they revealed they were seeking a compelling story for a film project. Given just minutes to pitch an idea, Badgett shared his concept, impressing the group enough for them to request a script.
The American leading the effort was Jim Henson, the legendary creator behind The Muppets. Tragically, Henson passed away unexpectedly a week later, and the private agreement could not proceed. The story remained untouched for decades until Badgett’s son, Henry—a post-production director who has earned a BAFTA for digital compositing—encouraged his father to revive and expand it into a novel. Drawing on Henson’s encouragement to pursue “the great story,” Badgett added depth, backstory, and emotional layers.
Now, more than 45 years after that fateful encounter, the book stands as a testament to imagination, persistence, and the timeless appeal of a well-crafted tale. Badgett and his son are collaborating on a film script adaptation, bringing the journey full circle.
