On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, blast off with Stella, Jake, and Aunt Ava in Mission to the Moon – A Sensory Space Story by David Grigor – the groundbreaking, joy-filled children’s book that blends thrilling space adventure with multi-sensory magic so every child, from neurotypical to profoundly disabled, can touch, feel, and live the wonder of a lunar journey together.
Mission To The Moon
A new picture book is blasting off this winter, and it’s unlike anything currently on the children’s shelf. Mission to the Moon – A Sensory Space Story, written and illustrated by David Grigor, isn’t just meant to be read – it’s designed to be felt, heard, shaken, smelled, and lived. In an industry first, a fully multi-sensory children’s title created in partnership with a leading disability charity has entered the mainstream market without compromise, proving that true inclusivity can be mainstream magic.
Stella has always dreamed of floating among the stars. One ordinary evening, the astronaut in her favourite picture suddenly speaks, promising to take her imagination to the Moon and bring it safely home again. In a swirl of sparkles and rocket fire, Stella, her brother Jake, and their Aunt Ava – a real-life astronaut – are launched on an unexpected adventure.
What follows is pure joy: zero-gravity breakfasts that drift off the plate, bouncy moonwalks across silver craters, cosmic treasure hunts, and the discovery that courage and imagination are the greatest rocket fuel of all.

Breaking the Rules, Beautifully
Most sensory books stay in the “special needs” corner of the bookshop. David Grigor and Scottish charity PAMIS decided to break that rule.
Working closely with families of children and young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), they crafted a book that speaks to every kind of reader at once:
- Neurotypical children who love space
- Reluctant readers who prefer touch to text
- Sensory seekers who need texture and sound
- Early years, teens, and even grown-ups who still believe in dream in starlight
The pages are filled with tactile moon dust, crinkly rocket foil, fluffy cloud cushions, glowing constellations, and hidden sounds waiting to be discovered. Yet the storytelling never takes a backseat – the language is rich, funny, and warm, and the illustrations burst with colour and life.
David Grigor
From a very young age, space fascinated me. As a child, I painted rockets and dreamed of exploring the stars. As a sixth former at Brighton College my passion led me to establish an Astronomy Society where we tracked Halley’s Comet across the night sky. My enthusiasm grew stronger when, as an adult, I attended the Educator’s Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama. On completing the course, I was awarded ‘The Right Stuff’ medal in 2009 which was a great honour. These transformative experiences, including simulated space missions, training exercises and meeting former professional astronauts, became the inspiration behind this story.
“MISSION TO THE MOON follows Stella and her brother Jake as they embark on an extraordinary adventure with their Aunt Ava. Together, they discover the thrill and wonder of being astronauts, journeying to the moon, and learning about the limitless possibilities of imagination. My aim is to foster inclusion and inspire readers of all abilities, including those who are neuro-divergent or have other disabilities, showing everyone that we can reach the stars if we only dare to dream.
The sensory pages in this book were developed specifically to ensure that the adventure elements in my book can be experienced fully by readers of all abilities, especially those with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Through these activities, we hope to create meaningful connections, spark curiosity, and enable every reader to actively participate in and enjoy the journey.
