Veritas Theatre Company and KEPOW! Theatre Company, in association with Seven Dials Playhouse, proudly present the transfer of their triple OFFIE-nominated and award-winning play MONSTER from September 24 to October 18, 2025. This unflinching drama, written by Abigail Hood and directed by Kevin Tomlinson, explores the devastating ripple effects of childhood violence, the cycle of abuse, and the complex question of whether redemption or forgiveness is possible for those who commit unthinkable acts.
Set across two decades, MONSTER begins in 2006 in Glasgow, following Kayleigh, a troubled teenager trapped in an abusive home. Her intense friendship with fellow teen Zoe becomes a refuge, as the two dream of escaping to the Isle of Muck. However, when the adults in their lives intervene, a tragic chain of events unfolds, culminating in 15-year-old Kayleigh taking the life of her teacher Rebecca Hastie’s infant daughter. The play alternates between the events leading to this crime and Kayleigh’s adult life, probing deep questions about culpability, rehabilitation, and whether someone raised in violence is destined to perpetuate it.
Inspired by Real-Life Cases
While a fictional story, MONSTER draws on extensive research into real-life cases of childhood violence, including those of Mary Bell, who at 11 years old killed two young boys, and Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, who at 10 abducted and murdered a toddler. These cases, along with other lesser-known incidents, inform the play’s exploration of the factors driving such acts and their lifelong consequences. The narrative examines whether society fails its most vulnerable, the impact of trauma on young lives, and the possibility of breaking free from a cycle of abuse.
Themes of Trauma, Redemption, and Forgiveness
MONSTER confronts its audience with profound questions: Can a child who commits a violent act ever escape their past? Are those raised by “monsters” doomed to become monsters themselves? The play also explores the perspective of the bereaved, asking whether a parent who loses a child to such a crime can ever find peace or consider forgiveness—and whether forgiveness is even appropriate. Through its beautifully crafted narrative, the play delves into the need for love, the forces behind random acts of violence, and the potential for healing in the aftermath of tragedy.
