On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Nailed It! by Ted Hill MBE is a laugh-out-loud memoir that hilariously celebrates the glorious chaos of DIY disasters, domestic mishaps, and unshakeable optimism, perfect for anyone who’s ever confidently declared “How hard can it be?” only to turn a simple home fix into epic comedy gold.
Nailed It!
Ted Hill’s latest book, Nailed It!, delivers a side-splitting memoir that resonates with anyone who has ever picked up a tool convinced that a task would be straightforward—only to discover the hard way that it rarely is. This warm, witty collection of real-life stories celebrates the chaos of home improvement projects, family life, and the stubborn British determination to “have a go” regardless of the odds.

The Heart of the Book: Everyday Catastrophes Turned Comedy
At its core, the book recounts a series of authentic mishaps drawn from Hill’s own experiences as a self-proclaimed hopeful handyman. Readers follow along as simple jobs spiral into epic sagas: a leaky tap repair that escalates unexpectedly, a shelf installation that challenges the laws of physics, or flat-pack furniture assembly that tests patience to its limits. Motoring troubles and domestic hiccups join the fray, each transformed into tales of resilience laced with gentle humor.
The narrative maintains a consistently positive tone, blending wry observations with reflections on marriage, optimism, and sheer bloody-minded persistence. A loyal cat named Lucy and an eternally patient wife, Maggie, provide steadfast companionship amid the mayhem, adding layers of affection and relatability to the recounting of household upheavals.
A Uniquely British Spirit of Adventure
Hill captures the quintessential “have a go” attitude that defines so much British home life—from trips to the B&Q aisles to battles in the Luton living room (and beyond, following his later move to the south coast). The book highlights how confidence often outpaces skill, leading to crooked shelves, mysterious spare screws, and projects that veer spectacularly off course. Yet through it all runs a celebration of survival over perfection: the idea that laughing at the failures makes them bearable, even endearing.
The humor draws comparisons to the dry wit of James May, David Mitchell, and Tom Allen, offering a similar blend of self-deprecation and sharp insight into life’s minor frustrations.
Who Should Read It?
This memoir suits anyone who has uttered the fateful words “How hard can it be?” before diving into a DIY endeavor. It serves as an ideal companion for those spending Bank Holidays in sheds, a thoughtful Father’s Day gift for the DIY enthusiast dad, or a light-hearted warning for novices yet to embrace the joys and pitfalls of fixing things around the home.
Hill has already “failed” so readers don’t have to—or at least, they can fail with better company and a good laugh. The book turns potential tears of frustration into outright amusement, proving that optimism often triumphs over common sense.
