New York City art-pop project Blums released the debut full-length album Sunk Cost Fantasy via Take Care Records on August 7, 2026. Spearheaded by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kelsea Feder, the project captures years of creative evolution. The record distills fragmented memories, theatrical influences, and extensive live performances into a cohesive statement about repeated behavioral cycles.

The Genesis of Lead Single Cashout

The album campaign centers on the lead single “Cashout,” which pairs driving percussion with pulsating synthesizers. Feder wrote the foundation after an unsettling personal memory interrupted what was supposed to be an enjoyable evening. Rather than letting the frustration sit, she channeled that emotional friction into a celebration of catharsis.

During the final production stages, Feder walked around Maria Hernandez Park to write overlapping vocal layers. The track builds toward a chaotic crescendo featuring operatic vocals and cascading drum breaks.

Visualizing Internal Conflict Through Film

Directors Ella Sinskey and Colter Fellows translated this internal chaos into the official music video for “Cashout.” The visual concept stems from a long-standing desire to stage a bar dance sequence reminiscent of vintage cinema, paired with knife-flipping scenes on a roadside in South Jersey. Choreographer Matilda Sakomoto designed the movement, capturing the friction between wanting to live in the present and remaining frozen by past discomfort.

Feder previously introduced listeners to her sonic world with the single “Sinking/Soaring.” That track drew inspiration from her time working as a jazz club hostess. Built on mellow vibraphone and delicate keys, the song earned critical praise from outlets like Alternative Press and The Line of Best Fit.

Constructing an Art-Pop World Through Collaboration

Sunk Cost Fantasy represents nearly a decade of artistic exploration. Feder spent years navigating different creative avenues, including studying at an actor’s conservatory, playing in a Bushwick power-pop band, and singing backup on tour.

Working alongside co-producer Kirk Palsma, Feder brought together musicians from jazz and classical backgrounds to shape the album. Tracks like “Celsius” and “Judy” feature sudden stylistic disruptions, shifting abruptly from acoustic instrumentation into manipulated vocal rhythms and sampled noise. These structural choices reflect the unpredictable nature of memory and emotional processing.

Blums remains an active presence in the Brooklyn independent music scene. Feder frequently shares the stage with local acts like May Rio, Bella Litsa, and Shallowhalo, following preview sets at Union Pool.
