New Play, Night City at Southwark Playhouse, Explores London Gig Economy

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, running at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 9th September to 3rd October 2026, Night City is a sharp, darkly comic new drama that uses a dynamic soundtrack and movement to expose the raw realities of London’s gig economy.

A powerful new production is set to take the London stage this autumn, offering a raw and timely look at the realities of modern employment. Night City, a new play penned by acclaimed playwright Max Wilkinson, will make its debut at the Southwark Playhouse Borough. Running from Wednesday, 9th September to Saturday, 3rd October 2026, the production will occupy ‘The Little’ Auditorium.

Directed by the award-nominated Ebenezer Bamgboye, the piece is described as an expansive contemporary drama infused with sharp, dark comedy. The production integrates physical movement with a dynamic, electric soundtrack to explore the turbulent realities of survival within the capital’s gig economy.

Three Intersecting Stories of Survival

The narrative of Night City is structured around three interwoven perspectives, highlighting the lives of London’s often invisible late-night workforce. Grounded in real-life accounts and firsthand insights, the play tracks three individuals pushed to their absolute limits by insecure employment and the rising cost of living:

• Jack: A driver constantly chasing financial security behind the wheel.
• Tamara: A dedicated care worker striving to maintain empathy and compassion within a heavily pressured system.
• Riva: A recent arrival to the capital who discovers that establishing a new life in the city is far more difficult than she anticipated.

The production serves as an ode to those juggling multiple jobs and side hustles, capturing the duality of a city that offers immense excitement but remains inherently unforgiving to those struggling to get by.

An Acclaimed Creative Team

The production brings together a highly accomplished creative team with a proven track record in contemporary British theatre.

Max Wilkinson (Writer)

Wilkinson specializes in exploring urban environments and characters attempting to find meaning within an increasingly absurd world. His previous hit play, RAINER, which followed a delivery rider through the city, received widespread critical acclaim and is currently being adapted into a television mini-series. His recent political drama, UNION, is also being adapted for BBC Radio Four.

Ebenezer Bamgboye (Director)

Bamgboye is the current programming associate at Southwark Playhouse and an Evening Standard Theatre Award nominee. His previous directorial work includes the highly acclaimed production of The Lonely Londoners (Jermyn Street Theatre / Kiln Theatre), which secured multiple five-star reviews and award nominations. Following Night City, Bamgboye is scheduled to direct at the Almeida Theatre.

Clarisse Makundul (Producer)

An alumna of Stage One’s prestigious Bridge the Gap programme, Makundul is an established independent producer. Her previous credits include One Who Wants To Cross at the Finborough Theatre—voted one of the best theatre shows of the year by The Guardian—and Under the Kundè Tree at Southwark Playhouse Borough.

Deepening Ties with Southwark Playhouse

Night City represents a significant homecoming for its creative team, highlighting Southwark Playhouse’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent. Director Ebenezer Bamgboye and producer Clarisse Makundul previously collaborated at the venue in 2023 for Under the Kundè Tree, which Makundul wrote and performed.

Hosting the debut in ‘The Little’ Auditorium underscores the venue’s dedication to providing a platform for bold, contemporary storytelling rooted in lived experiences. The space regularly functions as a hub for both emerging industry professionals and the local community, including hosting the venue’s free theatre initiatives for older adults.
