In Emily’s Adventure, debut author David Swan crafts a paranormal young adult thriller that’s as emotionally resonant as it is pulse-pounding. Aimed at readers aged 13 to 18, this novel follows Emily, a teen whose life unravels after the sudden death of her father. As grief consumes her, strange and uncontrollable psychic abilities begin to emerge, pulling her into a hidden world of spirit guides, ancient secrets, and dangerous enemies. What unfolds is a gripping tale of self-discovery, courage, and the unseen forces that shape our lives.

Swan’s narrative stands out in the crowded YA landscape by tackling heavy themes—grief, anxiety, and mental illness—with sensitivity and depth. Emily’s journey is raw and relatable, capturing the disorientation of loss and the struggle to find one’s place in a world that feels broken. Yet, the story never lingers too long in darkness. Humor, warmth, and friendship shine through, embodied by Emily’s unforgettable spiritual companions: Boo, a white puma angel with a playful streak, and Crow, her steadfast guardian. These characters inject levity and heart, ensuring readers are carried through the novel’s heavier moments with hope.

The plot is high-stakes and fast-paced, blending spiritual mystery with real-world emotion. As Emily grapples with her newfound powers, she uncovers a destiny that could change everything—if she can survive the threat of old-world industrialists, sinister figures who will stop at nothing to destroy her. These villains add a layer of suspense, raising the question: will Emily embrace her powers and fight for her future, or will her enemies snuff out her light before she gets the chance?

What makes Emily’s Adventure so compelling is its balance of the fantastical and the deeply human. Swan speaks directly to teens who feel lost, broken, or uncertain, offering a story that’s both a thrilling escape and a reminder that even in the darkest moments, a greater purpose might be waiting. This is a novel for anyone who’s ever questioned their path or dared to believe in something bigger.

Emily’s Adventure is a must-read for fans of paranormal thrillers who crave emotional depth alongside supernatural intrigue. With its unforgettable characters, heartfelt exploration of healing, and a destiny worth fighting for, this book is poised to leave a lasting mark on its readers.

David Swan

The book was written for my daughter, but I also experienced phases of psychosis myself and channelled the experiences of grief and mental health into the book. As I reflect back on that time while I or anyone I know did not go through cancer, my father passed away, and again I am channelling my experiences of grief into the book.

I attended university at the age of 42, a first-generation working-class hero.  I studied creative writing and that is where my writing story began.  I have been writing and travelling for 10 years but whilst at university two people I loved passed away.

Following this I started to experience phases of psychosis, which I have now recovered from, and I have channelled my mental health experiences into the this first book, and subsequent blog.

I hope people enjoy Emily’s Adventure and her story helps readers understand grief and mental health a little more, whilst showing that even when things feel really hard, you can still grow, heal and achieve.
