Affirmation
Twin Cities singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul David recently shared insights into his latest EP, Affirmation, a project that blends personal conviction, musical evolution, and timely social commentary. With a career rooted in diverse influences—from rock to Broadway to church music—David’s newest release is both a reflection of his artistic journey and a bold statement of empowerment. The EP, featuring the title track, a B-side called Six Cups, and a remix of Together We, showcases his versatility and commitment to meaningful storytelling through music.

The title track, Affirmation, is a deeply personal piece that David wrote over a decade ago in 2013, with initial recordings laid down in 2021. Despite its early origins, David chose to hold off on its release, feeling the timing wasn’t right. The song’s core message—embracing personal power and resilience—resonated strongly with him, but he sensed it would carry greater weight at a moment when its themes could inspire healing. This year, amid social and political challenges targeting marginalized communities, David felt the urgency to share Affirmation with the world. The song addresses issues of discrimination and exclusion, particularly toward the Trans community, people of color, and the push against marriage equality, offering a reminder of inherent worth and strength.
David’s Affirmation is enriched by collaborations with talented artists. Guitarist Alex Maiers, a long-time collaborator, brings a dynamic layer to the track with his Queen-inspired guitar work, elevating its emotional and sonic depth. Additionally, Nashville-based vocalist Justin Ryan, known for his work in country and gospel music, as well as his web series Southern Gospel Sissy, lends his powerful voice to the track. Ryan’s gospel-influenced performance aligns perfectly with the song’s spiritual undertones, amplifying its message of self-affirmation. Their combined efforts, particularly in the track’s climactic chant, create a layered and impactful sound, with over 50 vocal tracks woven into the final mix.

Affirmation stands out from David’s previous releases, blending his signature rock sound with heavy vocal harmonies and theatrical elements. The song’s structure reflects his diverse musical background, drawing from his experience playing drums in orchestra pits for local theater productions and his time in church music. The first half of the song follows a traditional verse-chorus format, evoking Broadway’s dramatic flair. The latter half transitions into a repetitive, chant-like structure inspired by the Praise and Worship tradition, where a simple yet powerful message is reinforced through repetition. This chant, centered on themes of beauty, power, and love, aims to uplift listeners and instill a sense of unshakeable self-worth.
Exploring Nostalgia with Six Cups
The EP’s B-side, Six Cups, draws inspiration from David’s work as a professional Tarot card reader in the Twin Cities. Named after the Six of Cups Tarot card, which symbolizes nostalgia, reunions, and emotional connections, the song reflects on the passage of time and the bittersweet nature of memory. Sparked by lyrics David rediscovered from an old folder, the track captures the essence of reconnecting with high school friends at his 40th reunion. It explores how life’s highs and lows shape us, weaving in themes of dreams, loss, and growth. The song’s reflective tone resonates with the Tarot card’s meaning, making it a fitting companion to Affirmation.

A Danceable Remix: Together We (TL;DL Grad. Mix)

Rounding out the EP is a remix of Together We, a track from David’s earlier Artist’s Prayer EP. Originally created for a 2021 work conference, the remix transforms the song into a funky, danceable groove. David salvaged vocal and instrumental tracks from a glitchy original mix, focusing on the infectious drum tracks to craft a fresh sound.
Personal touches, like a voicemail from a friend with a charming Colombian accent, add a playful element to the remix. Additionally, David incorporated snippets from his 1984 high school commencement speech, tying the track to the EP’s themes of reflection and empowerment. The result is over six minutes of energetic, dance-floor-ready music that connects past and present.
