On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, discover why Pikachu reigns as the most expensive Pokémon card collection at over £47,700, outshining Charizard and Mew.
Pokémon Cards
A recent study by SolitaireBliss has identified Pikachu as the most expensive Pokémon card collection to complete, valued at £47,744.28 across 645 ungraded cards commonly available to the public. The analysis excluded rare graded cards, such as the first-edition base set Charizard, which can sell for up to £263,158. Pikachu’s cards range from £0.62 to £2,658.83, with an average price of £78.81 per card, reflecting its status as a global icon in the Pokémon franchise.
Charizard follows as the second most valuable collection at £43,838.36 across 330 cards, with the highest average card price of £137.95. Its most expensive card is valued at £5,037.59. Mew ranks third with a total value of £24,636.28 across 435 cards, averaging £60.30 per card, with its priciest card at £2,049.06.
The study highlights that collecting cards for a single Pokémon is often more manageable than completing an entire set, like the 172-card Scarlet & Violet – Black Bolt set released on July 18, 2025. However, costs vary significantly depending on the Pokémon’s popularity. Jolteon and Voltorb tie for the most valuable individual card, each with one worth £7,519.00. Conversely, Hitmonchan is the least valuable collection, totaling £1,154.12 across 77 cards with an average price of £16.03.
The Pokémon card market shows significant variation, with popular characters like Pikachu, Charizard, and Umbreon commanding higher prices due to their fanbase. Collectors are encouraged to pursue their favorite Pokémon for enjoyment, regardless of cost, as the hobby is rooted in fun and nostalgia.
Below is a list of the top 50 most valuable Pokémon card collections based on the study’s findings, sourced from PriceCharting and converted from USD to GBP at a 1.33:1 exchange rate. Newer sets were excluded due to market volatility.
