Pink Floyd Honored On Official UK Commemorative Coin By The Royal Mint

On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, celebrate over fifty years of progressive rock history as The Royal Mint honors Pink Floyd with their very first official UK commemorative coin and exclusive collectible plectrums.

More than fifty years after emerging from the London underground music scene, legendary progressive rock band Pink Floyd has been immortalized on their very first official UK commemorative coin. Released by The Royal Mint, this unique piece adds the iconic band to the prestigious Music Legends series.

They join an elite group of British musical royalty previously celebrated by the Mint, including David Bowie, George Michael, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Paul McCartney, and Freddie Mercury. This popular series has successfully distributed nearly half a million collectibles to music enthusiasts across 108 countries.

The Design: The Dark Side of the Moon Brought to Life

The coin’s reverse side was crafted by designer Henry Gray, who placed the world-famous prism from The Dark Side of the Moon at the center. Originally designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and illustrated by George Hardie, the prism remains one of the most recognizable and enduring symbols in music history.

Adding to the collectibility, select editions of the coin feature a specialized rainbow prism effect, capturing the vibrant full-color spectrum of the legendary album sleeve. Released in 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon has achieved phenomenal global success, selling over 50 million copies worldwide.

Exclusive Collectible Guitar Plectrums Released

To complement the coin launch, The Royal Mint is introducing a limited-edition exclusive plectrum crafted from precious and alternative metals, including gold, silver, and dark chrome.

Designed by Royal Mint artist Daniel Thorne, the guitar pick pays homage to the band’s rich history. It serves as a direct nod to legendary moments in rock history—such as David Gilmour’s unforgettable guitar solo on the track “Time”—making it a must-have keepsake for dedicated fans and collectors alike.

Formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining in 1968, Pink Floyd redefined the boundaries of modern music, art, and sound experimentation.
