Podcaster Interview – The Brettflix Podcast – Brett Harman

I interviewed Brett Harman about his life and career, the inspiration behind his podcast, The Brettflix Podcast, and the work that goes into producing it.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Brett, an ex-teacher turned podcaster and content creator. I have a huge passion for movies and entertainment and always have had a passion for presenting. I live in South Lincolnshire with my 3-year-old daughter, and I also have a side job of voice acting.

How and why did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting as I wanted to play on my passion and strengths of presenting. There is only so much you can achieve in short from content and I felt that a podcast could also be a great platform to pose fun, controversial and relatable topics to a guest.

What is your current podcast called, and how did you come up with the name?

It’s called THE BRETTFLIX PODCAST. With my name being Brett and my love for TV through NETFLIX… The name was born.

What platforms can we find The Brettflix Podcast on?

Apple, Spotify or wherever you listen to your podcasts. The short snippets are available on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook with full episodes available to watch on YouTube.

What is The Brettflix Podcast about?

Movies, TV shows, celeb gossib or everyday discussions that everyday people discuss. It could be rank your favourite biscuit or what meal deal do you think a certain celebrity would purchase. We also love to have quizzes and games that relate to our listeners.

Do you host The Brettflix Podcast alone, or have guest hosts/partners?

I host with Hannah who also helps with the production. We are still a young podcast, so we are yet to invite any guests but super excited to get our first one on!

Do you edit your The Brettflix Podcast or have someone who does it for you?

The Podcast studio I work with, edit the long form and all the audio. However, after I receive this, I then create the engaging shorts and reels for socials.

Do you script The Brettflix Podcast, or just chat as you go?

This is an unscripted podcast. However, we do have discussion topics and prepared quiz questions.

How has The Brettflix Podcast changed or developed since you began?

We have learnt through trial and error the best way to structure each episode. We also (organically through practice), have experience with timing and when to move on to the next subject. After the first 4 episodes aired we also began to see where we could improve within editing or just simple things like the setting up of cameras and microphones.

Over time I also created a new logo and strapline that really coincided with the show’s intentions and vibe. The Podcast has allowed us to grow in confidence and learn new ways of creating content. It has also helped raise awareness of our other accounts and we have consequently gained more following.

What are your biggest challenges with The Brettflix Podcast?

Thinking of new topics or subjects is always a challenge. You want to make sure you meet the requirements and needs of the audience whilst also being entertaining. Also allocating a structured calendar of recordings is tricky with other jobs and the running of a household.

What are your favourite podcasts to listen to?

Staying Relevant with Pete Wicks and Sam Thompson is hilarious. We also love The Escape Podcast which is centered mainly around movies and Marvel.

How and where do you promote The Brettflix Podcast?

The shorts and reels not only gain great views and provoke discussions but help to promote the podcast for free. The shorts are uploaded to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Do you earn money from The Brettflix Podcast, or is it a hobby?

It is slowly becoming another avenue of income alongside our other content creation. However, the podcast is still young and our skills and following are still improving.

What’s something you never expected about podcasting? What have you learned that surprised you?

That the filming goes so quickly. For the first few episodes we recorded in around 20 minutes and didn’t have enough topics planned. I have also learnt that it is less daunting and scary than I anticipated. I was concerned that a set, lights, cameras, mics and a crew would intimidate me. However, the crew add to the atmosphere, and you get used to the environment very quickly.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to start podcasting?

Start with a niche and think of ways within that niche to: inform, educate, entertain and engage. Have fun with it and remember that relatability of topics is a huge factor so that your audience feels involved. If you don’t have the budget to hire a studio, don’t worry. Some of the best podcasts are recorded on a phone on a couch. Also KEEP GOING. If the views are still not to your expectation… KEEP GOING. Your audience will grow and don’t be in a rush to succeed. It takes time.

And, finally, are you proud of what you’re accomplishing with your podcast? Is it worth the effort?

It is so incredibly rewarding, and you learn so many new skills. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved in such a short time. It is worth the effort to expand on your skills and content but it’s also so much fun.
