Tell me a bit about who you are.
I’m a 21 year old author native to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m in school obtaining my B.S. degree in Marine Science. I enjoy photography and running during whatever time I can spare in between my responsibilities. In my author life, I currently find interest in exploring new genres and storytelling forms within my future writing projects.
When did you first WANT to write poetry?
Truthfully, I never had a “Omg! I want to write poetry” moment for the simple fact that I wasn’t exposed to it enough. It wasn’t until after my book when I started to read poetry for what it’s worth. It’s so alluring and bewildering how human perspective can be translated on paper. Poetry is the embodiment of vulnerability. For me, it was the idea of being able to communicate such nuanced—and at times, harsh—emotions in such a breathtaking way that led me here.
When did you take a step to start writing poetry?
I made a subconscious transition from jotting down exact thoughts in a journal to transforming them into a poetic flow. I hardly read poetry before and during my time spent writing my debut book so I’m not sure how my author tone went in that direction but I’m incredibly happy it did!
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
It took me about 3 years. At age 18, I felt the most mental relief through writing out what I felt not knowing it would eventually make its way into an elementary school goal of mine. I wrote sporadically from 18 to 19, ordered each of the poems into chapters at 20, then published my book baby at 21.
What were your biggest challenges with writing The Silence Of Snow Is So Loudly Deafening?
I would say sounding like myself. It can be so easy to read plenty of good books (which I was doing) and unintentionally mimicking another author’s writing style. I didn’t want my writing to remind my readers of anyone but me because these are my experiences and only I have gone through them the way I did. When writing sounds too much like someone else, I feel its impact and influence can be overshadowed.
Do you keep to a theme with your poems, or just go where the mood strikes?
I definitely write when the mood strikes. My process goes a little something like: 1. A thought appears and I write it down, 2. I build off of it by letting whatever feeling control the tone., and 3. Refine with better synonyms and fix line breaks. My poems are directly reflective of who I am in that given moment.
What is your favourite poem in The Silence Of Snow Is So Loudly Deafening about and what inspired it?
If I had to pick, it would be one titled “Styrofoam Cups, Flipped Upside Down”. This particular poem was inspired by my great-grandmother. Every evening during the summer, me and my brother would walk into the kitchen and see our lunch on a red tray with styrofoam cups on top that she flipped upside down to keep the flies and dust off of them until we were ready to drink out of them. This is a particularly beautiful memory for me making this poem incredibly special.
Does music help you write or is it a distraction?
Music is my number one helping hand during my writing process. When I write, I like to visualize the story I’m painting to get into my raw feelings. It sets the mood and gets my creativity going. Music also calms my thoughts down and narrows my focus to the topic at hand. It is without a doubt my best writing aid.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did The Silence Of Snow Is So Loudly Deafening need?
As unorthodox as it sounds, I didn’t get any help with editing. I needed to trust my own flow as it was essential to the way I wanted my voice to be presented. Proof editing, evidently, was plentiful for various reasons but I had more than enough confidence in this project. Though, I will say that in the future I will be seeking professional help for longer—and less personal—projects.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write poetry?
I’ll always encourage people to simply read (all genres) if they’re looking to write any piece of literature. For poetry specifically, I’d suggest to read a lot of text heavy books to strengthen vocabulary while also studying the intended audience. Depending on who the author wants to write for, they may want a more academic sound or a less formal setting. If they have those down, the rest will come easier.
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
I’ve had some ideas for a while now especially after publishing and talking with alike authors. I find writing an incredible use of my time and path to share messages of mine that I find worthwhile. With that being said, I plan to release a trilogy focusing on black love and spotlighting the best of human traits.
And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
I am so extremely proud of myself for accomplishing this feat. I’m a person that simply has to see the fruition of my projects; meaning I will keep working until it is finished (and to my standards). This was one of few for me that felt daunting and cycling. The effort I put into it was taxing so I truly couldn’t be any prouder to be a self-published author with a poetry debut!
