David L Haigh

Land Kill is my first novel. The idea came from a spell of memory mining. From my student days I recalled a regular who frequented the local pub. He had taken the brave decision to abandon his lucrative, but stressful life as a city stockbroker to rear pheasants in Essex.

The DCI’s love of growing crops on his allotment is a reflection of me. Having lived near the Cumbria / Northumbria border for twenty years I am familiar with the area in which Land Kill is set. The rest of the story stems from my imagination.

The door is open for the DCI and other officers featured in this book to return in a follow on novel. To this end I have begun drafting an outline scheme.

Between 2003 and 2017 I wrote a weekly gardening column for The Cumberland News. During this period I had articles published in Cumbria Life, The Northern Gardener and The Lake District Gardener. To hone my writing skills I attended two five day creative writing courses run by Lancaster University.

After retiring from my horticultural career in 2015 I wanted to expand my writing repertoire. With this aim in mind I attended another creative writing course close to where I was born and bred. This culminated with the publication of my memoir Born to Dig: A Gardener’s Chronicle in 2021.

Since June 2022 I have been a member of Stewartry Writers, based in Galloway.
