On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Reformation 2020 by Canon Walker is a bold, thought-provoking book that interprets the upheaval of 2020 as the dawn of a profound cultural and spiritual reformation—comparable to the 16th-century upheaval—offering readers a compelling invitation to recognize the seeds of renewal already sprouting amid today’s confusion and division.
Reformation 2020
A recently published book titled Reformation 2020 offers a provocative and insightful examination of contemporary Western society. This concise volume blends critiques of modernism with theological reflections and social commentary, presenting a distinctive perspective that stands apart from typical discussions on these themes. It aims to provoke thought, encourage debate, and potentially inspire meaningful change.

The Impact of 2020: A Moment of Pause and Reckoning
The book highlights 2020 as a pivotal year when the world came to a sudden halt. Despite the remarkable achievements of Western civilization—marked by prosperity, scientific advancement, and social progress—the frenetic pace of modern life was abruptly interrupted. This unprecedented pause brought underlying tensions to the surface, exposing cracks that had been forming for some time. Rather than viewing this as a mere disruption requiring minor adjustments or a simple system reset, the author frames it as the onset of a profound reformation, comparable in scope to the 16th-century Reformation that reshaped religion, politics, and culture across Europe.
A Movement Already Underway
This reformation is portrayed not as an abstract intellectual pursuit or a coordinated effort by activists, but as an organic shift emerging from everyday human interactions. Discussions in various settings are leading people to question established assumptions, cross traditional boundaries, and abandon outdated perspectives. The author describes it as a gathering momentum driven by the human spirit, signaling a broader cultural and spiritual turning point.
Navigating Challenges Toward Renewal
In an era defined by confusion, division, and conflict, the book identifies opportunities for positive transformation. It argues that amid these stresses lie the potential seeds of renewal. By confronting the issues head-on, society can move toward constructive outcomes rather than mere survival. The work encourages readers to engage actively with these developments, matching the author’s observations against their own lived experiences.
Exploring the Roots of Our Current Predicament
A key strength of the book lies in its interdisciplinary approach. It draws from historical, political, and theological traditions to analyze the philosophical and cultural consequences of the post-pandemic landscape. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding our present moment by examining our origins, including the evolution of political systems, economic structures, core values, and foundational beliefs.
Central to this exploration is the question of human identity—what it truly means to be human in today’s world. This fundamental inquiry underpins the book’s examination of sustainability challenges facing contemporary society.
The chapters are intentionally brief and focused, designed to make complex ideas approachable for a wide audience. The book speaks directly to anyone grappling with these profound questions, inviting reflection without requiring specialized knowledge.
Canon Walker
Canon Walker, the author, brings a grounded and multifaceted viewpoint shaped by decades of service as a parish priest in the Church of England. His past role as Rural Dean of Hull, combined with active involvement in both the spiritual and civic life of his community, has given him deep insight into societal dynamics. Rooted in the everyday realities of his adopted city and close connections with local people, he connects broad historical patterns to present-day shifts across politics, culture, and faith.
This work is born out of experience as well as study and research. Apart from a brief period working for the Inner London Education Authority, most of my working life has been spent in the City of Hull. Living close to the university enabled me to complete a postgraduate MA and some years later submit an M. Phil. thesis which was conferred in the year 2000.
My experience as a director on the board of the local Community Development Trust has also been influential. This has been for me a source of valuable insider-knowledge with regard to the governance and management of a small/medium sized company. In tandem with this, participation in the area of urban regeneration has been important. This has been both as an elected representative on Hull City Council’s Local Strategic Partnership as well as involvement in neighbourhood projects.
