After settling in Hawaii in 1932, Eskridge emerged as a vital visual chronicler of daily life just before statehood. His watercolors, oils, and celebrated WPA murals depicted surfers, fishermen, paniolos, and hula dancers with profound empathy and clarity. Rather than treating his paintings and prose as separate ventures, he used them as dual tools to make history vivid, human, and enduring.
Always restless, his creative journey extended far beyond the Pacific. He later expanded his palette while traveling through Brazil and Portugal, responding to diverse cultures with the same attentive eye that defined his island masterpieces.
