In a heartfelt gesture that underscores his roots in the UK’s vibrant music scene, Newcastle singer-songwriter Sam Fender has donated the full £25,000 from his Mercury Prize win to the Music Venue Trust (MVT). The organisation is dedicated to protecting the nation’s grassroots music venues, which have faced unprecedented challenges in recent years.

Fender, 31, was awarded the prestigious prize on 16 October for his third studio album, People Watching, hailed as the best British or Irish record of the past 12 months. Rather than pocketing the cheque, the Geordie star immediately pledged it to the MVT, citing the crucial role these small venues played in launching his career.

“Grassroots venues were everything to me growing up,” Fender said in a statement. “They gave me a stage when no one else would, and they’re the lifeblood of new talent across the country. Without them, there is no music industry. I’m proud to give this back to the MVT to help keep those doors open.”
