On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, discover the ultimate no-nonsense guide to life as Susie Hall, the Sassy Godmother, serves up 50 sharp, funny, and deeply wise pearls that blend corporate savvy, spiritual truth, and unapologetic sass—helping women ditch comparison, embrace their authentic power, and navigate every chapter with courage and a wicked sense of humor.
What inspired you to take your coaching experience and turn it into a book for women?
In my coaching work, I was already sharing ideas, approaches, tips and tools that clients found genuinely useful. If I sensed someone was open to a more spiritual way of understanding the world, I’d offer those insights too and see what resonated.

I’d always wanted to write a book, but the idea didn’t crystallise until I began thinking about distilling all my life’s wisdom into one place. My clients were so enthusiastic about the prospect that their encouragement spurred me on. Given that my female clients connected most powerfully with this wisdom, it made sense to write the book with women in mind – although much of it is universally applicable.

Your book blends corporate know-how with spiritual insight and humour. How did you find that balance?
For me, the soulful or spiritual side isn’t separate from who we are. I want readers to feel that this part of themselves belongs everywhere – in work, in relationships, in everyday life.
I’ve always been a practical communicator, so whether I’m coaching or writing, I aim to explain ideas clearly and simply. Humour comes naturally and makes the work far more enjoyable. Spirituality shouldn’t feel abstract or esoteric; it should be something you can apply immediately. Because there’s no unified “theory of the universe”, my aim is simply to describe how I see it in the most useful and accessible way possible.
You describe Sassy as the “older woman every young woman wishes she had in her life.” What do younger women most need to hear right now?
They need to free themselves from comparison. One of the strongest messages I can give is that it’s absolutely OK to be who you are. Celebrate your individuality – don’t try to blend in. Get to know yourself better and showcase your strengths and talents.
Understand that failure is part of the natural course of life. Build your courage muscle. Don’t run when the going gets tough.
And have your own mind. Don’t buy into something just because a celebrity told you to. Be more discerning, question things, and think for yourself.
Which Pearl of Wisdom do you think readers will find hardest to practise – and why?
Honesty and self-awareness go hand-in-hand. If you develop one, the other tends to follow. But personality plays a big part.

Self-awareness requires time, quiet, reflection and a willingness to invite feedback – which not everyone wants to do. If you have a defensive streak, a fixed mindset, or a strong ego, honesty becomes harder. But the work is worth it. When you’re more self-aware, everything in life improves.

You’ve been on a 35-year spiritual journey. What piece of wisdom has stood the test of time?
Being present.
Presence connects you to the moment, to life itself, and dissolves much of the stress we manufacture in our minds. It’s the foundation of meditation, of awareness, of enjoyment. It never fails.
Can ambition and authenticity truly coexist? How do you see the connection between spirituality and success?
It depends how we define success. I know people with very little money who are spiritually evolved or who’ve dared to live their dreams.
Yes, spirituality and conventional success can coexist. But I’ve also noticed that the more spiritually evolved someone becomes, the more they turn away from the typical “trappings” of success – because they start to feel empty. The real heaven is within.
If you can keep your ego in check and avoid becoming attached to the baubles of success, you can maintain a healthier balance between the two.

Your book feels like a conversation with a wise, funny friend. How important was humour in writing about serious topics?
Absolutely essential. Humour is woven into my life – it’s how I was raised and how I navigate the world. I use it in my work, my talks and my writing.
If I’m going to explain something meaningful, humour makes it more engaging and memorable. Laughter is grounding, healthy and part of what makes us human.
You’ve said Sassy isn’t a guru, just someone who’s “been round the block.” What has life taught you about getting through difficult chapters with grace and a bit of sass? And what makes you the right person to write this book?
You need courage. Without it, you risk staying in damaging situations far longer than you should. Compassion and healthy boundaries are essential too. Life is a constant balancing act.

As for being the “right” person to write the book – it’s my communication skills. I can translate experience into something relatable, entertaining and useful. I’m still learning and evolving, and I pass those insights on.

What simple daily practice would you recommend for someone who’s lost touch with their feminine energy or intuition?
Get out of your head and into your body. Move, dance, feel, reconnect with the sacral area and let that energy flow.
And when you get a hunch or a knowing feeling, don’t dismiss it. Give it airtime.
Each Pearl ends with reflective questions. What do you hope changes for readers once they’ve worked through all fifty?
That they take action. That something shifts and stays shifted.
If readers build a better relationship with themselves, it creates a domino effect in every part of their lives. If they answer the questions honestly and have an aha moment that prompts real change – whether that’s communicating differently, being braver, or finally doing something they’ve put off – then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.
