In my book “Toad” is humorous and “Vision” is visionary. During my ten years in a high security psychiatric unit I would get ideas for poems and quickly jot them down and then the staff would type them and print them.
I can quote at length from WH Auden, Dylan Thomas and Shakespeare. I have memorised roughly 150 lines of academic knowledge. My father was given the CBE for art and his brother, Micheal Hilton wrote for the Telegraph for thirty years. I would have made a journalist if things had gone down the right roads. My life got off to a good start (with two grade A ‘A’ levels), six months at London University and six months at art school. But following a serious psychotic breakdown in Brighton in 1988 I served twenty three years as a patient in psychiatric hospitals and twelve years in a care home where I am allowed out all day and consort with other intellectuals.
