In the bustling streets of West Kensington, London, a secret door will soon swing open to reveal the smoky, rebellious heart of 1890s Montmartre. Opening on 24 March 2026, Chat Noir! — the latest immersive spectacle from The Lost Estate — invites audiences to step back in time to Le Chat Noir, the legendary Parisian cabaret that birthed modern nightlife.
The Birthplace of Cabaret: A Brief History
The original Le Chat Noir opened its doors on 18 November 1881 at 84 Boulevard Rochechouart in Montmartre, founded by the charismatic impresario Rodolphe Salis. Often hailed as the world’s first modern cabaret, it revolutionised entertainment by blending artistic performances, absinthe-soaked conversations, shadow puppetry, and live music in a venue where bohemians, poets, painters, and revolutionaries mingled freely.
Salis, a failed painter turned visionary host, created a space of anarchy and art. The cabaret featured innovative shadow plays, satirical songs, and resident talents like a young Erik Satie at the piano. Its famous black cat symbol became an emblem of Parisian nightlife. The venue closed in 1897 shortly after Salis’s death, but its influence sparked cabarets worldwide, from the Moulin Rouge to contemporary clubs.
The Lost Estate: Masters of Immersive Worlds
The Lost Estate has earned acclaim as London’s “immersive heavyweights” (Evening Standard) for transforming vast spaces into fully realised historical eras. Past hits include The Great Christmas Feast (a Dickensian Victorian extravaganza), 58th Street (Jazz Age New York speakeasy), and Paradise Under the Stars (1950s Havana). Their 30,000 sq ft West London venue becomes a canvas for blending theatre, live music, and gourmet dining into transcendent experiences.
Inside Chat Noir!: Story, Performances, and Music
At the centre stands Rodolphe Salis, portrayed by the “Dandy King of Cabaret” Joe Morrose, as he orchestrates his final, feverish revue — a celebration of love, madness, and anarchy. He summons iconic figures: magician Buatier De Kolta (acclaimed magician Neil Kelso), dancer Cléo de Mérode, mime Paul LeGrand (virtuosic Pi the Mime), and chanteuse Yvette Guilbert.
The roaming house band, Les Enfants Vagabondes, led by a young Erik Satie, features a ragtag quintet (piano, violin, cello, accordion, percussion). Composer-in-residence Steffan Rees crafts new arrangements of masterpieces like Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Bizet’s Carmen, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre. Performances spill from stage to tables, interwoven with mesmerising shadow puppetry — a nod to the original cabaret’s innovations.
Guests become part of the bohemian crowd, rubbing shoulders with poets, illustrators, and mad romantics in a world of flickering lamplight and swirling smoke.
Decadent Dining and Absinthe Rituals
Dining evokes the indulgent secret suppers of Paris’s wayward elite. Tables groan under classic haute cuisine: Coq au Vin, Crème Brûlée, champagne, Parisian cocktails, and an extensive old-world wine list. Executive Chef Ashley Clarke and Head of Beverages Ilya Demenkov deliver a feast of “butter, brilliance, and bohemia.”
An emerald-lit Bar de Absinthe serves Belle Époque cocktails, with traditional fountains dripping iced water over sugar cubes into the green spirit — the ritual that fuelled artistic abandon.
Design and Immersion: A World Built for Surrender
Head of Design Thomas Kirk Shannon, lighting designer Mike Gunning (credits include Alice’s Adventures Underground and Grace Jones), and couture by Susan Kulkarni create a tactile, seductive 360-degree environment. Phones are forbidden; dress code encourages vintage Parisian flair — silks, velvets, waistcoats, and smoky eyes.

The three-and-a-half-hour experience runs Tuesdays to Sundays (with matinees) until at least September 2026.
