I interviewed Aaron Deakins about his life and career, the experience of working on his latest project, Warfare, and what he loves about acting.
Tell me a bit about yourself.
I’m Aaron Deakins, and I’m from Plymouth! You can catch me in A24’s new film Warfare, where I play US Navy SEAL Bob. I’ve got some exciting projects coming up, too. I’ll be playing the son of SAG and Critics’ Choice Award winner Will Roberts from Oppenheimer in The Way Love Speaks. Plus, I am developed the original concept for Sublime, a high-energy film about an energy drink that will be making waves at the Cannes Film Festival. I’m also set to shoot The Butterfly Keeper in 2026 and Tape 53, the sequel to Tape 52, with Amazon.
When did you first realize you wanted to be an actor?
It’s funny – I actually wanted to be a paleontologist at first. But then I watched Rocky IV as a teen, and everything changed! That movie sparked my passion for fitness, combat, and acting.
What is your favourite thing about performing?
What I love most about performing is the chance to dive deep into a new character, push my limits, and discover what I’m truly capable of.
What classes or training sessions have you taken to support your acting career?
For Warfare, we went through an actual Navy SEAL boot camp. It was tough but eye-opening. Seeing what those guys do every day was inspiring and gave me a new perspective on what I could accomplish as an actor.
What was your first professional acting job?
My first professional gig was in the TV show ALIEN Outbreak and The Comic Strip Presents: RED TOP.
What was your most recent professional acting job?
Most recently, I worked on Warfare, starring alongside Will Poulter and Kit Connor, directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza.
Tell me a favorite experience in your career. Something that stands out in your memories and makes you want to find more experiences like it.
One of my favorite experiences was training with the Navy SEAL’s for Warfare. The whole process, from the grueling training to being on set, was unforgettable. It pushed me to work even harder and gave me a real hunger to keep growing in this industry.
What was your toughest experience in your acting career?
Without a doubt, Warfare was the toughest experience. It was incredibly challenging, but in the best way possible. It pushed me to learn new skills and step far outside my comfort zone.
Have your family and friends been supportive of your acting career?
My friends have been incredibly supportive, and my family has always been supportive in their own way. They might not fully understand what I do, but they always have my back.
Tell me some career goals. What would you like to achieve?
I have big goals for my career. I’d love to be at the helm of multiple franchises and be the creator and driving force behind both film and TV projects.
Tell me something you were surprised by, something you had never realized about being a professional actor.
One thing that really surprised me about acting is how much you learn about yourself throughout the process. It’s not just about playing someone else – it’s about discovering parts of you that you didn’t even know existed.
What are words of advice you have for other aspiring actors?
My advice is simple: go for it! You’ll hear “no” a lot, but that’s just part of the journey. When you finally get that break, it makes everything worth it. Give it everything you’ve got, and never, ever give up.
