The Spark of Inspiration

The journey began in 1960 during a skiing trip in the Alps, where Disley, then a prominent journalist, met Margaret Kelly. Captivated by Kelly’s story, Disley left her thriving career on London’s Fleet Street to dedicate herself to documenting the life of this remarkable woman.

Over two years, she made six trips to Paris, staying for six weeks at a time, conducting extensive interviews. With her 21lb German Telefunken tape recorder in tow, Disley meticulously captured Kelly’s journey from hardship to global acclaim, laying the foundation for what would become The Bluebell Story.

A Tale of Triumph Over Adversity

Margaret Kelly’s life was a mosaic of courage and determination. Born into poverty and plagued by invalidism as a child, Kelly defied the odds to create the Bluebell Girls, a dance troupe that became a symbol of elegance and artistry. Her resilience shone through during World War II, when she endured incarceration in a prison camp while five months pregnant and later risked her life to save her husband.

From the glittering stages of Paris to audiences worldwide, Kelly’s ambition and vision transformed the world of dance, shaping the careers of over 14,000 Bluebell Girls during her lifetime. Her troupes continue to thrive, a lasting tribute to her legacy long after her passing in 2004.

A Manuscript Marred by Controversy

Disley’s labor of love faced significant obstacles when Kelly unexpectedly refused to authorize the completed manuscript, leaving Disley devastated. Without Kelly’s approval, London publishers declined to move forward, stalling the project. The situation worsened when another author approached Kelly, who not only agreed to a new biography but provided Disley’s manuscript to the writer.

After a protracted struggle involving London’s leading literary lawyer and Kelly’s agent, Disley successfully reclaimed her work. Now living in Warwickshire, the 95-year-old author remains uncertain whether her manuscript was copied during the ordeal, a lingering question that adds a layer of intrigue to the book’s history.
