In a thrilling convergence of musical mastery, pianist-composer Dave Palmer, bassist Reggie Hamilton, and drummer Joey Waronker have united to form the Dave Palmer Trio, a jazz ensemble that blends decades of experience into a fresh, composition-driven sound. Their forthcoming debut album, recorded in July 2024 at Hollywood’s Boulevard Recording, marks a striking entry into the jazz landscape, rooted in tradition yet unafraid to push boundaries.

The trio’s origin story is as swift as it is inspired. In June 2024, Palmer, a Philadelphia native with a storied career alongside artists like Fiona Apple and Fleetwood Mac, reached out to Hamilton and Waronker—two musicians he long admired. Hamilton, a Los Angeles-based bassist known for his work with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and Waronker, a versatile drummer currently touring with Oasis and previously collaborating with Beck and R.E.M., answered the call. Within a month, the trio was tracking in the studio on a vintage Bechstein piano, guided by producers Niko Bolas and David Resnik of CMG.

The result is a collection of original compositions that prioritize swing, structure, and elegance over virtuosic flash. Drawing inspiration from jazz legends like Duke Ellington and Ahmad Jamal, Palmer’s writing emphasizes songcraft as much as performance. “This is the beginning of an evolution of sound,” Palmer says, framing the album as both a statement of intent and the foundation for a lasting collaboration.

A standout track, “Duke’s Blues,” encapsulates the trio’s ethos. Accompanied by a surreal black-and-white music video directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Slade (Black Mirror, Breaking Bad), the song pairs sophisticated interplay with a playful edge, underscored by a collage of AI-generated dog clips. It’s a fitting visual metaphor for the trio’s artistry: rooted in jazz tradition but infused with modern, experimental flair.

Each member brings a wealth of experience to the project. Palmer’s resume spans Air, Tegan and Sara, and more, while Hamilton’s basslines have anchored performances for Anita Baker and others. Waronker, a drummer of rare nuance, has lent his talents to Roger Waters and beyond. Together, they craft a sound that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, redefining what a modern jazz trio can be.
