Following a sold-out, critically acclaimed run at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre, The Importance of Being Earnest is taking London’s West End by storm this autumn. In a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions, this vibrant reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s most celebrated comedy will light up the Noël Coward Theatre, a Delfont Mackintosh Theatre, from 18 September 2025 to 10 January 2026.

Hailed as a “bold and brash Wilde reboot” by The Times and a “sparkling new production” by the Daily Mail, the show has already captivated over 165,000 UK viewers during its initial run and through National Theatre Live cinema screenings worldwide. With tickets starting at £25 and over 20,000 available for under £30, this limited season is accessible to a wide audience. Public booking opens on Monday, 16 June 2025, at 12pm, offering theatregoers a chance to experience this joyous spectacle.

A Fresh and Flamboyant Take on a Classic

Directed by Max Webster, this production reimagines Oscar Wilde’s timeless comedy with a bold, contemporary edge. Described as a “Wilde party of irresistible anarchic charm” by The Guardian, it infuses the classic tale with vibrant energy and a striking hot pink aesthetic.

The story centers on Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, two friends who lead double lives to escape societal constraints. Jack, a dutiful guardian in the country, adopts a false identity to revel in town, while Algernon employs a similar ruse. Their deceptions lead to hilarious complications, particularly when love enters the equation, as both men attempt to woo eligible ladies while entangled in a web of lies. This production’s modern sensibility and exuberant staging make Wilde’s razor-sharp wit feel as fresh and relevant as ever, celebrating his legacy as a trailblazing queer artist and literary icon.

A Stellar Cast Led by Olly Alexander

The production boasts a stellar ensemble, with actor, singer-songwriter, and activist Olly Alexander stepping into the role of Algernon Moncrieff. Known for his captivating performance in It’s a Sin (Channel 4) and his music career as the frontman of Years & Years, Alexander brings a dynamic energy to Wilde’s iconic character.

His stage credits include Peter and Alice (West End) and The Aliens (Bush Theatre), while his musical achievements include two UK number-one albums and a BRIT Billion Award. In 2024, he represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest with his song Dizzy.

Joining Alexander are Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jack Worthing, Stephen Fry as the formidable Lady Bracknell, Shobna Gulati as Miss Prism, Hugh Dennis as Rev. Canon Chasuble, Kitty Hawthorne as Gwendolen Fairfax, and Jessica Whitehurst as Cecily Cardew. The ensemble is completed by Jasmine Kerr, Sam Liu, Gillian McCafferty, Elliot Pritchard, and Liv Spencer, who also serve as understudies, ensuring a robust and versatile cast.

Max Webster, an award-winning director renowned for Life of Pi (West End/Broadway), Macbeth (Donmar Warehouse/West End), and The Lorax (Old Vic), leads the production with a visionary approach. His creative team includes some of theatre’s most celebrated talents: set and costume designer Rae Smith, known for her visually stunning work; lighting designer Jon Clark, who crafts the production’s vibrant atmosphere; sound designer Nicola T. Chang, enhancing the show’s dynamic energy; and movement director Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, who infuses the staging with flair.

Composer DJ Walde provides a contemporary musical backdrop, while physical comedy advisor Joyce Henderson, intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon, voice and dialect coach Kate Godfrey, and casting director Alastair Coomer CDG round out the team. Associate artists, including Aaliyah McKay (director), Tim Blazdell (set), Johanna Coe (costume), Hector Murray (lighting), and Chris Reid (sound), ensure every detail is meticulously crafted.
