On The Table Read Magazine, “the best arts and entertainment magazine UK“, Chicago industrial supergroup The Joy Thieves team up with Chris Connelly for “The Wrong End of Your Rifle,” a fierce, hip-hop-infused alternative rock anthem taking aim at corporate greed and digital apathy.

Chicago’s alternative rock and industrial collective, The Joy Thieves, have unleashed a fierce new single titled “The Wrong End of Your Rifle.” Serving as a preview for their full-length album Apocalypse Pending, released via Armalyte Industries, the track targets the unchecked power of global elites and corporations.

A Jagged Critique of Modern Society

Featuring the distinct vocals of Chris Connelly—known for his work with legendary acts like Ministry, Pigface, and Revolting Cocks—the new track channels a universal frustration. It zeroes in on billionaires and massive corporations operating without consequence, using state violence and economic suppression to enforce their will.

The thematic core of the track examines a bleak modern landscape where human life is devalued. The band tackles how extreme violence is routinely packaged as digital content, consumed and subsequently ignored by a society numb to the screens in front of them. The song serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of for-profit prison systems and the futility of trying to reason with systemic force.

The Anatomy of an Industrial Supergroup

At its center, The Joy Thieves revolves around the production and musical duo of Dan Milligan and James Scott, operating as Joy Thieves Productions. However, the project functions as a massive, ever-evolving musical supergroup.

Since partnering with the prominent London-based alternative-industrial label Armalyte Industries in 2018, the collective has put out 11 highly praised releases. Their signature style is forged by a rotating roster of over 80 musicians spanning punk, industrial, darkwave, hip-hop, and rock. This expansive network includes current, former, and touring members from an astonishing array of iconic bands, including:

Fusing Industrial Rock with Golden Age Hip-Hop

The sonic foundation of Apocalypse Pending features a unique production twist. Many of the tracks began with producer and drummer Dan Milligan recreating iconic hip-hop breakbeats using modernized drum sounds.

For “The Wrong End of Your Rifle,” the band built the entire arrangement over a reimagined version of the classic Soul Searchers breakbeat from “Ashley’s Roachclip.” The deliberate goal for the album was to seamlessly marry the established, heavy industrial-rock identity of The Joy Thieves with elements from the golden era of hip-hop.

Keeping the Chicago Sound Alive

Though the collective features contributors scattered across the globe, the music remains deeply rooted in the spirit of Chicago. Produced, engineered, and mixed at Populist Recording + Mastering, the material honors the city’s rich history of industrial rock while actively pushing the boundaries of the genre into new, forward-thinking territory.
