The Kooks Comeback
The Kooks are capitalising on the triumph of their comeback album Never/Know, with frontman Luke Pritchard already deep into recording their eighth studio album.
Inspired by the strong reception to their seventh record—which debuted at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart in May 2025—Pritchard has wasted no time. In a recent interview, he shared: “I’ve already started recording it and done the first couple of tracks.” He added that the positive response has left him “very energised,” declaring, “It felt like we’re back.”
The Return with Never/Know
Released on May 9, 2025, via Virgin Music Group/Lonely Cat, Never/Know represents a heartfelt return to the band’s indie-rock roots. Primarily self-produced by Pritchard (with one track co-produced by J Lloyd), the 11-track album blends soulful influences with personal themes of fatherhood, love, and growth.
Highlights include the joyful lead single “Never Know”—an ode to romantic unpredictability featuring a distinctive whistled intro—and the emotional “If They Could Only Know.” The record also includes a vibrant cover of Wings’ “Arrow Through Me,” which shaped its warm, analog sound.
This No. 5 peak marks The Kooks’ highest UK chart position in 17 years, since 2008’s Konk topped the charts.
Enduring Appeal and New Generations
Nearly two decades after their platinum-selling debut Inside In/Inside Out (2006), The Kooks—core members Pritchard, guitarist Hugh Harris, and drummer Alexis Nuñez—continue to thrive. Viral revivals of classics like “Naïve” on TikTok have attracted a younger audience, with nearly 8 million monthly Spotify listeners, many aged 18-24.
Pritchard has described this era as one of reclaimed joy and authenticity, free from past pressures.
Looking Ahead: Tours and More
The arrival of 2026—marking the 20th anniversary of their debut—sees the band have a packed schedule, including a European tour starting in February and UK outdoor dates celebrating Inside In/Inside Out.
With Pritchard’s creative momentum, the upcoming eighth album promises to build on Never/Know’s spontaneous, feel-good energy, ensuring The Kooks remain a vital force in indie rock for years to come.
