On The Table Read Magazine, “the arts and entertainment magazine UK“, The Reading Agency is launching a landmark prison campaign to distribute 480,000 accessible Quick Reads books across the UK, using the power of reading to boost literacy, support rehabilitation, and transform lives behind bars.
The Reading Agency has introduced a major new literacy initiative across UK prisons to coincide with the government-backed National Year of Reading. Supported by funding from The Henry Smith Foundation, the campaign marks the 20th anniversary of the flagship Quick Reads programme by delivering nearly half a million books directly to individuals in custody.
This ambitious project is part of a larger mission by the charity to distribute one million accessible titles to communities facing significant barriers to literacy. By integrating reading into prison wings, cells, and educational programs, the initiative aims to build sustainable pathways toward rehabilitation that persist long after an individual’s release.

Addressing the Literacy Crisis in the Justice System
The launch comes at a critical juncture for literacy in the UK, where overall reading enjoyment and confidence are experiencing a decline. Research consistently highlights that reading for pleasure significantly enhances life outcomes, offering benefits such as higher educational achievement, improved mental wellbeing, and greater social mobility.
These challenges are particularly pronounced within the criminal justice system. Data from the Ministry of Justice reveals that 65% of adult prisoners struggle to read unfamiliar texts, leaving many in need of fundamental literacy and employment-related skill support. Inspection bodies have frequently emphasized that reading is an essential tool for rehabilitation, helping individuals build confidence, maintain family connections, and prepare for successful re-entry into the workforce.
Two Decades of Quick Reads
Established in 2006, the Quick Reads initiative focuses on publishing short, engaging books by both prominent and emerging authors. These titles are specifically designed for adults who encounter barriers to reading or struggle with focus. Over its 20-year history, the programme has achieved significant milestones:
- 147 unique titles published.
- More than 5.6 million copies sold or gifted.
- Nearly 6.4 million library loans generated across the UK.
By providing concise and compelling narratives, the initiative serves as an essential entry point for individuals who might otherwise feel excluded from the world of literature.
Key Objectives of the New Campaign
Set to roll out in the autumn, the targeted prison project will implement several strategic measures to improve literacy behind bars:
- Mass Distribution: Delivering 480,000 Quick Reads books across the UK prison estate.
- Continuity of Care: Providing dedicated reading packs to individuals both upon entry and post-release to maintain reading habits outside of custody.
- Educational Integration: Embedding accessible titles into existing prison education and peer-supported reading frameworks.
- Engagement Toolkits: Supplying promotional materials, activation toolkits, and organizing author visits and ambassador events.
- Collaborative Design: Partnering with prison leadership and incarcerated individuals to co-produce the initiative, ensuring the book selection reflects the diverse interests and experiences of the readers.

High-Profile Advocacy and Future Impact

To further drive engagement, The Reading Agency is expanding its author ambassador network within correctional facilities. The campaign has gained the backing of international bestselling author Lee Child, who serves as the UK’s first Prison Reading Laureate. Alongside advocating for the initiative, Child is contributing a brand-new title to the Quick Reads collection to help captivate readers across the prison estate.
By centering marginalized readers during the National Year of Reading, the campaign looks to harness literature as a practical tool for personal transformation. The ultimate goal is to ignite a lifelong appreciation for reading that helps individuals successfully transition back into society.
