Drawing on their experience writing for legendary British impressionist and comedian Rory Bremner, the Fowlers serve up a distinctly British blend of dark humor, sharp wit, and cathartic release. This isn’t just a collection of zingers—it’s a testament to resilience, a middle finger to adversity, and a reminder that laughter can be the best medicine when the world feels like it’s unraveling.

The book covers a 12-year period that the Fowlers cheekily describe as “almost nothing at all happened”—unless, of course, you were awake for it. From political blunders to cultural meltdowns, the UK and USA provided no shortage of material for satire during this time. Think government incompetence, societal facepalms, and moments so absurd they practically begged for a punchline. The Fowlers, with their knack for distilling chaos into comedy, revisit these years with a mix of nostalgia and therapy, reminding readers of events they might have forgotten and offering a chance to laugh at those they wish they could.

What sets Two Idiots and a Genius apart is its heart. Mary, a breast cancer survivor, and Tim, a disabled writer, bring a deeply personal perspective to their work. Living with Tim’s disability and Mary’s role as his primary carer, the couple has faced challenges that could easily dim one’s spirit. Instead, they’ve channeled their experiences into comedy, proving that humor can be a powerful tool for coping. Their book is not just a comedic triumph but a bold act of defiance against a publishing world that often overlooks disabled writers and undervalues carers. For the Fowlers, writing and laughter are cornerstones of mental wellbeing, and their work shines as an invitation to find joy amid life’s messiness.

The “Genius” in the title refers to Rory Bremner, the iconic impressionist whose razor-sharp performances have long skewered politicians and public figures. The Fowlers’ writing credits for Bremner form the backbone of the book, with many of their best lines polished and paired with fresh material. The result is a collection that feels both timeless and current, packed with jokes they wish they’d thought of at the time and new quips that hit just as hard. It’s a love letter to satire, to the absurdity of modern life, and to the man who brought their words to life with his unparalleled comedic flair.

Two Idiots and a Genius is more than a book—it’s a survival guide for navigating a world gone mad. Whether you’re chuckling at the Fowlers’ clever takes on political gaffes or marveling at their ability to find humor in hardship, this is a read that entertains, uplifts, and reminds us all to keep laughing, no matter what. For fans of Bremner, satire enthusiasts, or anyone who lived through the madness of 2012–2024, this book is a must-read. It’s therapy, it’s comedy, and it’s a damn good time.

Mary And Tim Fowler

Leaving jokes on the cutting room floor, so to speak, is often a soul-draining endeavour that leaves writers weeping into their morning tea. With this book, we were able to go back through our archives, polish up our material, and of course, add to it! How could we not laugh at the past twelve years? The world was at times ridiculous, unfair, and almost impossibly bleak. But comedy kept us going through hardships, and our hope is that someone might open this book when they most need it and have a good chuckle. If it makes a person laugh at something they might otherwise cry over, then it’s done its job.

Mary and Tim Fowler

Mary Fowler is a sharp-witted writer with an MA in Creative Writing, who traded fleeting forays into unread poetry for the punchy world of comedy after spotting her husband Tim crafting jokes for Rory Bremner. Proudly Irish, Mary’s kiss of the Blarney Stone fuels her gift for spinning absurd “what if” gags that land with precision. As the shorter half of the “Two Idiots” duo, she brings a vibrant, resilient spirit to her work, shaped by her experience as a breast cancer survivor and Tim’s primary carer. Living near Durham with Tim and their cats, Dexter and Boudicca, Mary keeps their home moderately tidy—though she advises against inspecting the dust or peeking under the rugs.

Tim Fowler, a Belfast-born Ulsterman, has shed his accent except for the peculiar way he says “compost” and “oven,” much to his family’s amusement. A politics junkie with a degree to match, Tim swapped yelling at the TV for the marginally more dignified craft of writing political comedy in 2012, contributing biting material for Rory Bremner. Disabled yet undaunted, he channels his love for satire into work that skewers the absurdities of modern life. Tim shares a village home near Durham with Mary, their two cats, and an impressive record collection, where he continues to find humor in the chaos of the world around him.

Together, Mary and Tim Fowler are a comedic powerhouse, blending personal resilience with razor-sharp wit to create Two Idiots and a Genius, a testament to their talent and tenacity.
