This December, Arrow Films revives a cornerstone of hip hop history with a brand-new 4K restoration of Wild Style, Charlie Ahearn’s groundbreaking 1983 film. Available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and streaming exclusively on ARROW, this release coincides with a special screening at the BFI London Film Festival on October 8-9, 2025, in partnership with American Express, as part of the festival’s ‘Create’ and ‘Archive’ strands celebrating the creative process.
Set in early 1980s New York City, Wild Style is a unique hybrid of fiction and documentary that immerses viewers in the vibrant South Bronx hip hop scene. Independent filmmaker Charlie Ahearn and downtown artist Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite ventured uptown to document the explosive world of graffiti artists, breakdancers, and MCs wielding two turntables and a microphone. The film offered many their first glimpse into the cultural phenomenon of hip hop, now recognized as one of the most influential music films ever made.
The narrative follows lone graffiti artist Lee “Zoro” Quinones as he pursues artistic success on his own terms. Supported by real-life figures like Fred “Fab 5 Freddy” Brathwaite, Sandra “Lady Pink” Fabara, and Patti Astor, the film blends scripted drama with authentic performances from hip hop pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash, Busy Bee, The Fantastic Five, and The Cold Crush Brothers. The score, crafted by Chris Stein of Blondie and Brathwaite, features iconic breakbeats that have fueled crate diggers and producers for decades.
Endlessly sampled, imitated, and debated, Wild Style remains the truest portrait of hip hop’s formative years.
